I know many members have removed their sail panel vinyl upon a repaint/restore and never put it back on afterwards. If you did that, did you put the chrome trim back on? If you didn't put chrome trim on, what did you do with those "ridges" on the panel?

The rear chrome almost always goes back on. The side holes get welded closed. Andyrew cut off the ridge and welded it flush. Looks great but is a lot of work.

Removed the vinyl on mine. Am planning on replacing it with the 914rubber kit when I have it repainted but looks ok for now.

I removed the vinyl when I had my car painted 7+ years ago. I did have the sail panel painted black with some texture to it. Put the chrome strip back on it. I think it turned out very well.

Here's mine. I bought it like this and I kind of wish it still had the vinyl. Oh well

I've never liked or cared for sail vinyl, probably because one of my cars didn't come with any. Always saw it as an early 70's automotive fashion trend due to the convertible laws of the time.

Body shops have a black edge-molding that works just fine. Not the cheap stuff from the local FLAPS but something like this...

http://www.trimlok.com/prod/Size-Ranged-Ed...C-Trim_193.aspx

You can buy it in any size needed for whatever edges you have to cover.

Good luck

I think the cars look better without the sail panel vinyl. Thanks for all of the pics. I like this pic with the extra metal ridges removed. Of course, the next owner of this car one day will call me a DAPO if I do this!!

I think I am likely to go with chrome trim with body color painted sails or have someone construct me a stainless steel (brushed aluminum?) "cap" to fit the entire targa bar area ala a 911 targa.

I like how the roof "spear" detail hits the rear fenders and I think the vinyl/chrome strip interrupts that. IMHO
