I'm going to be replacing the +10 year old 165R15 tires on my low mileage '74 2.0L soon and I'm debating between these two Sprint Classic sizes from Vredestein.
165HR15 185/70HR15 Will I see any real difference in the performance and road feel between these two? Attached image(s)

I can't comment on the tire itself, but the 185/70-15 is an excellent size for a near stock replacement.

I had Vredestein 185/70HR-15s on my -6 stock 'steelies' years ago. Performed fine and I was driving the car more back then. Only reason I replaced them was they started to crack in the sidewalls after 15+ years. Have Yokohama now, but they are 20+ years old. Still look almost new though (maybe 1500 miles on them...)

I'm running the Vredestein 165HR15 on my car (4.5" wide steelies). They have good traction for such a skinny tire, and decent ride quality. I got them 2 years ago, and they're holding up fine.

Boy some of those names bring back memories. I used CN36 WAY back when and then the P6 came out and we thought that was best thing since sliced bread...
Amazing how skinny those 165's are now! |

Jeff,
If you're considering the Vreds, then you're probably not dead set on getting original tire makes (Pirelli CN36s, Michilin XAS or XWX in those 165 & 185 sizes), so you might also want to consider the Blockley repro of the 70's Dunlop SP57 (OE on most 2Ls) & Semperit M401/501 "Dog Bone" tread 165HR15 & 185/70XR15 (or /75) tires, available from Lucas Tires in Long Beach CA (Longstone UK's USA company). http://www.lucasclassictires.com/165VR15-B...Radial-504p.htm I had Semperit M401/501s on my 73 2L back in the day, which tested as well as & handled as well as the Dunlop SP57 165HR15s - but the Dunlops typically only got 15-20K miles, while the Semperits got 40K+. I haven't tried the Blockley's myself, but I'm thinking seriously about getting them for mine when ready to go. The dog-bone tread design is very grippy for a street tire, & the SP57s were also used back in the day for racing, as I hear are the Blockley's today. Cheers! After much debate I finally got around to purchasing tires. I ended up getting the Vredestein Sprint Classics in the 185/70/15. I got a good deal through Tire Rack by picking them up directly at the warehouse and saved on the shipping. Looking forward to mounting them.
This article (and the price) helped sway my decision to go with the Vredesteins..... https://www.cinturato.net/images/test-classic-tyres-0716.pdf Attached thumbnail(s) |

I think you'll like the 185 over the 165 size. It's a great size tire for the 914.
