Mineral spirits are NLA in SoCal. What do you all use to clean off silicone? I've scraped all I can; I need to get the rest off.
Goo Gone supposedly works, but I tried it and it didn't seem to do much. Maybe I have the wrong kind. I need to remove it from the rear window and from around the rear window frame on the car. EDIT: I found a solution. I used Motsenbockers Lift-off. It apparently works by loosening the molecular bond. I scraped off as much as I could with a razor. I applied the lift-off. Let it sit for about 3-5 minutes. I was then able to scrub it off with a rag. Took about 3 applications. The flour just made a mess! The other suggestions did not work for me. ![]() This post has been edited by 914 RZ-1: Mar 11 2018, 08:19 PM |

You have to scrape it. It grabs by capillary action and the shit is really good adhesive.
Take pictures to show us. Do you not want to damage the paint? Are you going back with new black butyl? What color is the silicone? If black why not just put more to put the window back in. Bob B |

Even acetone will not eat it. You have to rub it off. Wire wheel and that kills the paint. It is not you ordinary adhesive

I have had success using a clear marine type of adhesive. I apply it onto the edge or the rear window, after a thorough cleaning. I did not remove the factory applied silicone seal that is in the rear window track. The adhesive works well and will keep a very tight seal. You do need to use some type of brace to hold the glass in place for at least 24 hours.

It's around the rear window area.

What about any products available at the big box stores like Home Depot?
Like this: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Motsenbockers-1...11-16/202103458 Two of the 5 search results were for scrapers! I may order some mineral spirits from Amazon. Does it work well? What about the substitutes available in Calif? What about denatured alcohol? |

I do not think it will melt away. Use a flat edge and try to cut it off or lower it. It will cut with a fresh razor blade. I have worked with silicones for molds for 40 years. Pouring them, cutting then with razor blades. Silicone in the form that you have stuck on is an adhesive. When you get that stuff on your hands it does not want t come off. Wiping it with a towel and even then with Acetone it still is on yours hands. Silicone, like spray silicone is a mold release not and an adhesive like what you have stuck on your car. Never get spray silicone or products that contains silicone need and thing you want to paint or you will get Fisheyes Bob B |

I went looking for some at Lowes, couldn't find any. I was told "brush cleaner" was supposedly the same? They just changed the label according to the salesperson. I don't believe it yet I bought it anyway. |

FYI Mineral Spirits is now banned within the South Coast Air Quality Management District.
They are trying to reduce VOCs and are encouraging use of acetone or mixes of stuff with acetone as a substitute. SCAQMD is LA County, Orange County and parts of Riverside and San Bernardino counties. If I want mineral spirits I now have to go to Ventura or San Diego I hate them. |
