In the Marine Corps as an aircraft electrician, I knew every system of the aircraft. I'm sure I could have taxied and flown one of the jets. Landing takes skill. I'm absolutely sure I would have had a very hard landing. If you know the systems and theory behind what they do , it's not that hard to get one up in the air... Landing on the other hand... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blowup.gif) The old saying is ‘we can teach anyone to take off and fly straight and level in just a few minutes. It’s landing that takes many hours to learn.’ But again, this guy was not a mechanic according to available information. Still would love to know if there is a flight simulator at SEATAC for the Q... I don't know bout that. It takes several hours for them to get "straight and level" down pat. Even after you trim it out for them. Students are "ham fisted". Several years ago there was a troubled kid (10-11 yo) and this guy would take him up in his 310. The kid snuck out to the airport with another kid and took to the sky's. IIRC, they walked away from the landing but did some damage. Might have been San Antonio or Dallas. Well I am a pilot and I was taking off, flying straight and level, doing turns about a point, and just to f**k with me a stall in the first hour so... Instructor whispered landing instructions and ghosted my hands on the yoke that first day. |

I'd love to go wring one out with you. I wish. I am required to renew my medical card evert six months due to an eye condition that can cause me to go blind literally over night. Curiously, it’s been very stable. Or I guess thankfully would be more correct. Getting a flight physical isn’t covered by virtually any insurance and it’s too expensive for me to justify very six months. Last flew a Pilatus PC12 five years ago with a second pilot on board. Mark Whitesell actually walked out to the plane with me that day. He was in Reno and had a layover. |

Too bad they didn't scramble fighter jets on 9/11/2001 in the same fashion they did yesterday.

Sad they are playing his tower communications and he prefered to do some stunts, nose dive and crash versus trying to land it.

Too bad they didn't scramble fighter jets on 9/11/2001 in the same fashion they did yesterday. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/WTF.gif) The military doesn't have fully armed fighters just sitting around on the tarmac waiting for something stupid to happen. Even the ones that were sent up this time were not armed. |

I haven't read any follow-up to this story in the past few days, but was having a discussion the other evening with a friend who thought Rich might have had training to taxi the plane from the ramp to the maintenance hanger. Correct me if I'm wrong, but pilots normally arrive at the aircraft at the gate just like any passenger. However when a plane is taken out of service for maintenance, it's operated by non-pilots that have been trained in the start-up and taxi procedures. Does this checkout?
If Rich had such training, he may have simply been crossing the active runway when the urge to just "go for it" hit and well, the rest is history (along with Rich, RIP). Mark, are you able to shed more light on this? |
