So I have a dumb question, but as my wife (who is a teacher) always says, the only dumb question is the question not asked so here goes..

I recently replaced the fuel lines in my 71 with stainless and new braided hose in the engine compartment. My question is, the lines that I purchased from Pelican, the smaller ones, which I believe would be the return lines, would not fit over any of the fittings so I just used the larger line. Does it matter if I use the larger braided hose for both supply and return?

Should be fine. The bigger concern should be if the braided fuel line is E85 compatible. Those old school rubber fuel hoses do not like modern gasoline.

If they’re not leaking, you are good.
I like them to have a snugg fit when you punch them on so the clamp just serves to secure the line, not crush it.

That's a good thought and something I never considered. How do I know if the new lines are E85 compatible?

Snug I understand, but I could not get the smaller lines over the fittings no matter how hard I tried. Thank you for your reply.

If it was inexpensive it is not compatible.

Should be marked 30R9 or higher

Depending on year, it's either 2 same size lines (8mm I think) or an 8mm and 10mm. The fittings on the gas tank will match as well as the filter and fuel pump so not exactly an easy solution.

Is this true? I was sold these lines from Pelican Parts. At no time did they say that they shouldn't be used with fuel.

I don't know the rating of the fuel lines you have or what the line was marketed or sold as.
There is a difference between rated for gasoline and for gasoline with ethenol added to it.
There is fuel line on the market that is fine for pure gasoline (what ever that is) that is not rated for gasoline with ethenol. Most markets in the US now have ethenol added to the fuel.

Most flaps sell ethenol rated fuel injection hose that works on our cars.

Thank you for your response and your information. I called PP to get a quote about everything needed to replace my plastic tunnel lines and all other fuel lines and they sent me braided ones. I will check back with them to see if they are in fact compatible with gas with Ethenol. Thank you!

When I redid my fuel hoses I was impatient and just went to the Oreilly's Auto Parts by my house and bought some Gates FI Hose with SAE Spec 30R14-2.
You need 30R9 or higher, the 30R14 handles the current fuel but the are 2 version of the Gates hose.
The -1 version is low pressure nit for FI, only 50PSI rating, this is what they brought out first to sell me.
The -2 version is rated at 225PSI which is what I used on my car.

I had to explain to them there were specs for fuel hose.
The AutoZone by me only had 30R7 spec hose and didn't know what it meant.

30R7 is low pressure hose, technically it can be used on the low pressure sections of a FI system but it's only a few 6" sections so I stick with the 30R9. After reading the technical data I use 30R9 even with carbs.

All braided hose I've used becomes brittle and obvious cracking can be seen on the cut (clamp) end of the hose in as little as 12-18 months.
It's OK for smog/vacuum lines but I refuse to use it for fuel.

7mm ID for the engine bay fuel hose. The original nylon tunnel tubing is 8mm and 10mm.

Fires suck. Get that braided crap off your car. :-)

When you put the real fuel line in, remember to use FI clamps, NOT worm gear clamps. They will eat up the fuel hose.
