So I am a new 914 owner ( 1973) - car is running, but the clutch will not engage. Last owner said they thought the linkage was broken - but in looking under the car, the rod is moving just fine from shifter back to transmission. As I am poking around today I notice this cable end out near the rear / firewall. Is this my clutch cable? I think it is, but confused where the rest ended up.. and... where should I look/ repair for this? THANK YOU! ![]() |

It will not engage. The movement on the stick / shifting "motion" plays through the shaft to transmission. Not sure what else may be wrong. I'll try to jack it and block it up higher as I havent been able to get under very well. I suppose I will have to keep digging in.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) That's one of the heater duct pull cables.
Your clutch cable is the thick one with the plastic protector on it, seen just "above" your thumb in the first photo. If your clutch isn't fully engaging (disengaging the transmission), it could be that the cable isn't tight enough...or that the clutch tube has broken free of its mounts in the tunnel...or that there's not enough "throw" in the throwout arm. My engine drop video (in the playlist you can access through the link in my signature) shows how the clutch cable is attached. If the cable is loose, try tightening it. If it doesn't seem to get tight even after many turns of the nuts, you probably have a broken clutch tube. Very common. Google "914world broken clutch tube" and you'll find lots of good info. Or...is the problem that you can't get the car into gear? Best of luck and (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png) |

I think that long grommet on your clutch cable (again, right below your thumb in the photo) is suppose to press fit into the engine mount bar.
I've had that grommet pop out resulting in a disabled clutch. |

The cable you should be looking at for the clutch is this one. The spacer shown is typically through the engine mount bar hole, but it would work without it being in there. It attaches to a housing that has a pulley that looks like this

You can have someone depress the clutch and it should move to disengage.
If you are lucky (relatively) the grounding strap from the transmission to the body is not grounding and the next place for the current to travel is the clutch cable (ask me how I found this out). It can cause the cable to stretch, and even snap. As long as there is not a lot of noise while running, it should be a cable issue. |

I'm still confused (as usual)
You ENGAGE the clutch when you have it in gear, you take your foot off the clutch pedal, and the car moves. You DISENGAGE the clutch when you have it in gear and you push in the clutch pedal when you shift to another gear or come to a stop. 1. Is the clutch always ENGAGED...that is, it is impossible to put it into gear when the car is running? 2. Or is the clutch always DISENGAGED...that is, the car goes easily into gear when the car is running but won't move when the clutch is let out? 1 or 2? |

1. You push the clutch pedal down to disengage the engine from the transmission. I hear that mistake a lot.
The natural position of the clutch pressure plate is clamping the clutch disc. The cable (via the clutch pedal) pulls back on the clutch release arm, which pivots on a ball and pushes forward on the pressure plate springs to release the clutch disc. The flywheel and the pressure plate rotate with the engine. The clutch disc is splined to the transmission input shaft. When your foot is off the clutch pedal, all 3 are clamped together as one, and the engine drives the input shaft. When you push the pedal down, the pressure plate releases its grip on the disc, and you can shift gears, or sit at a stop with the engine running. I hope that's not too long-winded. Now. What EXACTLY is your car doing? No gears? Grinding gears? Or car will not move? |

OK, so I have looked at the pully/ clutch cable. When the pedal is fully depressed to the floor, the cable only moves about 3/4" total in/out. Can someone take a look at theirs - possibly post a video of how much movement the cable should have for a full depression of the pedal? I have removed the shift lever bolts - to "feel" inside the routing/housing - no play in the clutch tube at all.
. So when I push down the clutch, and put the transmission into 1st or 2nd gear and release the clutch NOTHING happens. When I pop it into 3rd or 4th gear - or reverse it makes terrible grinding noises, but still the car will not move. |

Hard to tell what's going on there by the video. I have a few suggestions for you to try, but if you're really new to this stuff, I don't want you to get hurt or hurt someone else. This type of thing can get dangerous if you're not experienced... I would suggest getting an experienced friend to help out. It's pretty easy to make a mistake and hurt someone.
Diagnosing this shouldn't be too hard, but be careful. |

Are the wheels off the ground and is the car stable. Hart to tell. Looks like it's sitting in gravel.

looks like ur clutch need adjustment (tighten) because base on the video it looks like ur clutch pedal is half way up. for the grinding? I think something wrong with ur clutch pressure or flyweel? Maybe you can try dropping your tranny. Not really difficult to remove tranny. Or your axle is just making that grinding since the rear is up? |

I think the grinding is just because the clutch isn't disengaging when the pedal is pushed. There is not nearly enough pedal travel so something is out of whack with the cable adjustment. Take the Dr. up on his offer and give him a call so he can walk you through it.
