After many responses to converting to carburetion I've decided to look into cleaning up and using the stock system. My concern is the boots that go over the fuel injectors are ripped off and the main harness outer housing has turned so brittle that It will probably break if moved very much. I assume I will be changing all of the fuel and air hoses but the are a few connections that are proprietary that look like they are in bad shape. Where would I go for replacements. If I'm going to do this I'm going to do it clean. Thanks.

You’d go to Jeff Bowlsby and buy a new harness. If the lines are brittle and you’re missing connections you really don’t want to mess with it. Too many possible gremlins.

Jeff reuses your old connectors. 914rubber and restoration design have engine harnesses with all new connections. It’s worth it since the old ones are 50 years old.

That rebuild connector kit is awesome! Man I wish I knew this was around and I could have made my own harness! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welder.gif)

Jeff reuses your old connectors. 914rubber and restoration design have engine harnesses with all new connections. It’s worth it since the old ones are 50 years old. One cannot always assume that new reproduction plastic parts of unknown material or durability are ‘better’ than factory originals. Unserviceable parts are not used if that is the implication. Most people here know that I have been building 914 wiring harnesses for over 20 years, longer than anyone in the industry, and I have always used only the best quality parts available and that includes factory OEM parts where NLA and when in good serviceable condition. The most important parts in my harnesses - wires, wire terminals, casing and boots, are all new factory OEM or better quality and the workmanship quality is first class. FWIW the plastic connectors are of the same material as the 50 year old brake fluid reservoirs on all 914s which still serve their purpose, so this is no cause for concern. 20 years of satisfied customers and a thousand 914s saved by my harnesses speaks for itself. |

Not really a good comparison. Brake fluid reservoirs don’t live in a hot engine bay with current running through. Many of the connectors on 30-50 year old Porsche’s are failing. If you reuse a 50 year old connector, will it last another 10-20 years and why take the chance if you can get all new. |

And this place sells the connectors... Might be other places too. http://reproparts.businesscatalyst.com/d-jetronic-home.html Connectors, pins, boots and everything else. That place is my go to for the d-jet specific wiring harness bits. Looks like their new online store page is having some issues at the moment though... |

If I'm going to do this I'm going to do it clean. Thanks. Take some pictures of the proprietary connections you are concerned with and we can tell you where to source new ones. I need to go double check my 72,but off the top of my head the only odd intake bits are going to be the throttle body to air cleaner boot and possibly 2 different "Y" vacuum fittings depending on what intake plenum is on your car (I have seen a couple different 1.7 configurations) If you want to go with original looking braided hoses a lot of the common vendors cary complete kits. Bobs VW down in West Valley also has a lot of the correct hose if you want to pick some up locally Here are some relevant part numbers for some of the more odd injections bits (not all may apply to your car) 022 129 637 B - Branch air distributor 022 133 215 - Y connector 022 129 973 - connector from TB boot 022 129 967 P - TB to air filter boot 022133241 - x4 intake manifold hoses 022 129 637 Vacuum elbow (you can get by without these but they can help clean up the hose routing 311 133 261 Fuel injector tip seals 914 rubber started making some of the more obscure parts as they were getting hard to come by https://914rubber.com/split-y-aar-valve-1 https://914rubber.com/branch-piece-air-dist...with-fittings-1 https://914rubber.com/engine-crankcase-breather-hose-elbow-1 https://914rubber.com/1-7-l-connecting-hose If you are pulling the old harness, you can usually get them out without bending them to much if you have the intake runners and plenum pulled off the car. HEAT also helps keeping them pliable, bending them around in 20 degree weather for sure increases your chances of cracking something, but in general you don't need to bend them to much. |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) for around $500 you cant go wrong,it would take away any future issues. The workmanship is top notch. |

Maybe the anology is not apples to apples, but what Jeff is saying is the connectors used are of the same durable plastic that factory used in much more demanding areas. The plastic is not usually a big issue. It’s the wires and connectors. Jeff does good work no doubt about it. |
