Only a 911 tach will work, 69-73 were silver dot.

It will work fine if you buy a tach-adapt. They are about $70 and a genius little piece.

I might have this backwards...
but a 4 cylinder tach will read 2/3rds of the rpm of a 6cylinder tach

so 4000 rpm when the motor is actually at 6000rpm.

A stock 914-4 tach can be made to work with a 6 cylinder engine by using one of these:

...but your indicated redline will be different from actual, unless you modify the fascia. Other options based on modifying your existing tach or replacing the tach core are available too, and range in price accordingly.

A 2.2E 911 motor uses a CD ignition. The tach output from it is low voltage, and won't trigger the 914 tach designed for a kettering ignition with a high voltage tach output.

Better to find a 73 911 tach. It will work with the CD box ignition, and will display correctly.
