The PO did not hack the door panels to drop in the typical 6.5" round speakers in the doors (like I did) so being thankful for that...

the stock speaker grilles are empty showing the painted body.

What do you use to keep the original look but upgrade the sound over stock speakers?

This car doesn't need a killer stereo, so do I just put stock speakers back in???

You can just put speakers back in if the door panels are nice. If you are thinking about swapping out door panels, we are doing up more now so can cover that for you if needed.
We do offer a pod that replaces the stock one that allows for 6.5 rounds with decent size magnets for better sound. We now even precut so you can mount easily

Recently installed the two-cone units AA sells. Much better than my old single-cone Radio Shack ones. Fit perfectly. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
Not Bose symphonic sound by any means but like Van B, I don’t want them to over power that wonderful air-cooled sound as I drive. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)

Pretty much any 4x6 will fit but the bolt spacing is usually off as factory is the no longer used metric size.

So options are the AA factory clones, get 6.5" pods, or fit aftermarket 4x6. The 6.5" will give you the fullest sound. You will hate a 4x6 if you enjoy music.

I bought a Sony bluetooth headset with active noise cancellation which you can switch off if you want to hear your engine noise in the background. Really nice if you need to be able to answer and talk on your phone w/o needing to pull over and turn your engine off. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

We put Kicker speakers in the stock speaker hole, Original stock speaker covers fit right over them.
I will say the radio does not get turned on much as I too like to hear my pumpkin go down the road.

These almost fit without mods, and probably would be fine for most people. I made adapter plates.

And they sound great.

Those are illegal here and possibly other places too. I never liked the isolation that headphones gave me in the car...always preferred to have enough sound to make the windows down disappear. After being used to a really good sound system for years, getting by in a 914 that I plan on driving longer distances in just doesn't sound like what I want. I've got 500 watts ready to load into the car so I can have the top off and cruise in style with great sound blasting at 80mph...this is Utah after all.

I ran moderate gauge 2-way speaker wire. BTW, this is what I use to drive the speakers. It is hidden in the center console, with the control box mounted in the center arm rest. I have no radio visible in the dash.
