Began cleaning the wiring harness of the 914/6 GT replica today... it's crusty as expected. It's had the usual hacks and splices and looks like some dead ends, but I haven't tested it yet. Expecting the worst, I've sent a request to Kroon for pricing.

Can anyone recommend a stateside source for wiring looms? Experiences?

Restoration Design is stateside adjacent and I know the guy who builds the -6 harnesses so a strong recommendation for the Canadians who do excellent work.

I was rummaging through my stash of original harnesses, and found a 1974 in very descent shape. When I examined the fuse panel I found several of the spade connector were quite loose. They would not stay tight when reinserted. A closer look showed the curled sides of the connectors were fractured and would never make good contact. Too much of my LE harness was hacked (48000 total miles) so it is being replaced.

I would buy one of Aase’s NOS 914-4 harnesses and change around the wires to make it a six harness. In my mind (non electrical person) it should be an easy mod.

Thanks Glenn, I didn't realize they made them... I'd expect that Kroon is equally spendy but would probably get it quicker from RD.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) Thanks for the idea, Mark! The engine harness isn't buggered (although the snorkel is gone along with most of the tape) the cockpit and front is. Wire for the -6 ignition shouldn't be hard to adapt.

I’m not so sure, but have not compared them side by side. Carefully compare the schematics and I suspect you will see differences in the dash/gauges/switches ignition areas. Look at the 14-pin relay board connection, bet it’s different too between the /4 and /6.

I’m sure you’re right. With the old harness available, you should have all the needed components and live schematic to change a four into a six.

BTW - I have a real 914-6 relay board if you need one for the build.

Jeff, I visited your site and saw you make quite a lot of products for -4s, do you rebuild -6 harnesses as well?

I may take you up on the relay board, Mark. This car sat outside a long time before I got it... everything is pretty crispy.

The whole steering column area is different between 4 & 6 as well as the combo gauge, the wiper motor and washer pump. Then the relay panel in the engine compartment is substantially rearranged with a lot of changes in the 14 pin plug.

I concentrate on the /4s. Perry Kiehl does /6 engine harnesses. The only sources I am aware for the /6 chassis harness is Kroon and RD. I have an NOS /6 harness in my harness reference library but its NFS.

I had Kroon build me a replacement 914-6 chassis harness back in 2019. Took several months to get it in. I believe it was around $3000 with shipping and core. He will also want your old harness in exchange or a core charge will apply. Kroon was easy to deal with but the only downside is the wait time.

I would check out the RD harness. If I ever need another harness I'd go with RD.
I believe they are also making 4 cyl harnesses now as well.

Thanks to you all. Spoke with the nice people at RD who will provide everything I need, and eliminate what I don't. (headlight motors, side markers, etc.)

Clearly wiser than trying to piece together a loom with iffy bits. Onward.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) I bought a nos harness for one of my builds and now I can’t go back to 50 year old wires. Soft and pliable compared to wires that feel like they might break in half. Now I’m having a new harness made up for my 67 build. Expensive but worth it.

Fresh pliable wiring is definitely the way to go.
You'll be happy in the long run.

I bought the 914 six wiring harness from Restoration Design. The quality looks very good and the overall process and communication with was excellent. I would recommend them based on my experience so far.
