I bought AA's heater blower update kit with the Y splitter and installed it over the weekend. The hose that goes over to the passenger side is very long. I'm interested ins seeing how others have that hose secured as it goes over the engine from the motor to the passenger side.
I'm guessing zip ties are used? My fear is that having it loose and flopping around in the engine bay, it could get sucked into the cooling fan (and it just looks bad). If you have this set up, please kindly share a pic of how you ran that hose from the motor to the passenger side? TYIA |

That hose sucks, way too floppy. They had a bracket for the 75 and 76 models that included this. Never seen one up close though. And for the hose, there is a multi page discussion on the World for your enjoyment. The original hose was stiffer and supported itself better but it was prone to heat aging and cracking.

I don't have a picture handy but i used large zip-ties from the engine lid support brackets to elevate the hose off the top of the engine itself.

You are on the right track being concerned. My buddy had to add back the heating system to his 74 as it had been removed years ago. The long hose did get sucked into the fan just as you described. My 74's long hose is really tight but I'm going to add a metal clamp or zip ties to secure it.

I zip-tied mine to the fan housing, and added one of these:

cut to just make it to the right j pipe route over the front impeller housing and put a tie around it in the middle

I believe the hose with the zip ties is also less flexible than what a lot of people sell. That makes a big difference.

Unfortunately you already purchased the Y fitting and hose.
I did have that installed and never liked the way it ran along the firewall. I did have it zip-tied to the firewall in the center. I realized i did not need the extra air going to the passenger side. the engine fan sends enough air to both sides, during normal operation. the fan only gives a slight boost when on. and with the small cabin size, it does heat it all up. |

My original condition 73 1.7L came with only the driver side hose installed, and the passenger side tin opening covered with a metal cap. Heater blasts me out as is! Took my Y off
Really didn’t like blocking the cooling air in any way If used. Try to push it rearward so it does not impede air flow between the firewall and fan housing |

I ran the long hose around the hose from the breather to the air cleaner. That keeps it out of the way.

i think there is some kind of idea out there that the y set up and twin hoses was an official option.
i can find no evidence of that what so ever when searching parts manuals etc. what i can find is that early 914s had the VW 411 set up with a more or less central fan and two hoses from the 4 and 2 door 411 sedans. and i believe in 73 it reverts for 914s to an adaption of the 411/412 variant (squareback) set up where they just use one hose biased to the drivers side - primarily for defrost of windscreen which is all the fan really needed to do. i think what happened is that dealers maybe, and certainly those in the know, knew was that you could use the VW 411/412 variant fan hose splitter to do a twin hose set up on cars post 73. but as i say i can find no evidence factory did it. all the parts to do the twin hose post 73 set up are from the VW 411 variant they did not need to worry about the hose blocking the fan in the VW model because the fan was sealed into a boot for intake air. the heater blower hose was draped over the top of the boot. and in the earlier twin hose set up with central fan the fan was mounted high and centrally off a bracket that kept both fan and hoses clear of fan intake. i would never personally want to do a twin hose set up on my 74 1.8. that hose lying there definitely compromises cooling intake air flow. and i live in a hot country. here is the VW 411/412 variant set up. what post 73 914s had was a special adaptor for the fan that went from single rectangle to single circular. to do the twin hose set up on a 914 you used all these VW parts. i believe there was a circular clamp used to hold those up above the fan casting and it bolted to one of the fan casting bolts. ![]() |

How did you mount the screen to the shroud? Three M6 machine screws. The mounting bosses are already there, and already threaded. - GA Thanks. I’ll feel around back there for the mounting bosses. I assume I will not have to drop the motor to install the screen? |
