Can some one tell me what the over all length (inches) of the forward shift rod for a 73 and later 914 is suppose to be ? I have a forward shift rod that measures 28 1/4 inches total. it is straight and is splined on one end and smooth on the other end. I t doesn't look anything like my 71 front shifter rod. Is it the right length for a side shifter front rod?

Can you post a picture of the rod you have?
The early and late front shift rods are different. The late front shift rod is 31" long. The diameter of the late rod is smaller.
Does it fit the firewall bushing? If so it is correct. If it is too large it may be an early rod.

This one is from a 1974. It is 31 3/32” long. The small end of the shaft is about 5/8” and the big end (smooth end) looked to be 25/32”

So the longer rod that is the most narrow diameter is the correct rod for the later 73 cars. 20 years ago I bought a 73 parts car and stored the 71 parts from the 71 being restored all together. Somehow I think a 71 shifter lever got put on a 73 front shift rod.Thank you guys for the help. Hopefully I have it correct? Attached Image

Yes that is correct. The shorter of the two is not for a tail shifter. A tail shifter would have a cup at one end that is 90 degrees to the shaft. The shift rod goes inside with a ball and smaller plastic cup bushing. I’ll take a picture.
