I dont have a battery tray right now. I'm going to buy one and weld it in if an optima gel battery will fit on it. If not I'll just fab my own. Well, will it fit? BTW I did a search and turned up nothing battery related.

Yep, they fit fine.

BUT, the normal red-top has the posts reversed from a typical 914 battery. This is easily cured by putting in longer cables -- fresh cables are not a bad idea at all on a car as old as our 914's.

There is supposedly also an "orange top" with the posts flipped, but I personally have never seen one.

Yes I have Optima batteries in each of my 914s, my 911 and my 29 Ford model A.
Plus if you write to Optima and ask them for a Group 78 adapter it will fit into and hold down your Optima battery using the stock hold down bolt location.

Thanks guys. I'll keep the group 78 thing in mind. Looks like I'll be doing some welding. It has the battery in the rear trunk right now.

I was thinking about the same thing. Now knowing the battery acid will eat away at the battery tray and other things. Will the Optima battery since it's sealed do the same thing a regular car battery will do, i.e. battery acid eat away the metal?

I run Optimas in both my 914s. One has it mounted in the trunk. The other is in the stock location on the stock tray. The terminals are backward but my stock cables worked fine without having to go to longer ones.

after you move or remove the bat from the trunk. squirt the trunk area where the bat is with a plant mister, sprinkle the area with baking soda. it will help neutralize the acid that is there. it's messy but it works. good solution for the stock location as well.

They have acid in them, it's just in a thicker form i.e. "gel-cel". The batteries are completely sealed and won't leak unless you put a bullet through it. I use one in my Jetta and Squareback as well. Just flip it around 180-degrees as mentioned.

Best solution ever - especially when you flip it out and have to put it back while it's shorting across the fuel rail !!
