Admins... Move this to another forum of not appropriate here.

My 17 year old sister (Junior in High School) want to go to Art School to be a photographer. She is already quite an accomplished photographer and is developing an excellent portfolio. She has recently started winning a number of competitions and has some of her work being published in a book.

I have purchased a web domain for her and I'd like her to start developing her online portfolio to share her work.

Which web-authoring software would anyone recommend that is...

a. for Windows-based PCs
b. relatively inexpensive
c. EASY to learn and to use
d. Creates professional results

She is not the most technical person, so I don't expect her to start inputting html code.

Advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

Qarl

I bet a Portal Based system would be perfect. PHPWEBSITE or a PHP/MyCGI photoLP would be the ticket. You set it up once, then use a web page to edit it. Really simple...

I personally use Coppermine for my photos and such http://coppermine-gallery.net/index.php It is a web "Server Side" PHP system customizable with any web browser. It is very nice. Oh and the best part, It's free.

I hope that helps a little,

I could also host a 'galery' for her to post her pics, free of charge.

Its on my fast server, not too big but ask anybody on the CISCO club and they'll tell you its rock solid.

Dream Weaver is what is taught in our HS...so I would say ask the high school what they are using...most schools have some sort of WEB training as well.

dreamweaver is good, I used that myself for a while. I have also used Frontpage (office app) and it worked well too.

Both have the ability to setup FTP, but the point is where would you upload to? You'd still need a server to upload to....

lemme know if you're intrested.

I have the domain and hosting already...that's not the problem.

I just want to find software for her so she can adminstrate and develop her web pages.

To create a virtual gallery of her work with some fancy effects.

I have Front Page, but I'd need to purchase something for her... just don't know if there is something easier/better/more appropriate for what she wants to do.

Thanks for the input.

Funny, in her photo, she doesn't look a day over 3! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

Just for grins, check out blogspot.com. It is one of the best and most popular free blogging sites on the web. It might not be what she's looking for, but it would be a super easy way to post images and make comments.

If you want your own hosting account and an easy to use WYSIWYG editor, check out Macromedia Contribute. It is Dreamweaver's little brother, so to speak, and is easier to use. I can't stand Frontpage, but it works too.

the 'gallery' program in linux (actually for many other server OSs too) does EXACTLY what you want.

http://reactornet.net/~britt/gallery/

like that

The newer one, version 2, which I have I think, has teh ability to do remote posting of pics...so going onto the interface isnt needed at all (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

Oops. You snuck a post in on me. Sounds like Frontpage or Contribute would be appropriate.

If she decides she doesn't mind a learning curve and wants to go top of the line, I've got a complete Dreamweaver MX 2004 package you can have.

Qarl,

Christopher suggested Coppermine and I think he is probably on the right track. I have set up quite a few websites using Gallery which is very similar. I prefer using Gallery since it is now database driven and has a lot of very useful functions. As examples, the search function is excellent as well as your sister could choose to automatically watermark all of her images so it would be difficult for them to be directly pilfered. There are some screenshots of sites using Gallery here.

Setup is definitely not for the novice. But once it is running, it is very simple to use. My sister is a casting director and she uses it for making talent headshots available to producers. It is also incorporated directly into my wife's site for displaying her property listings (she is a Realtor).

Check it out. If you decide that this makes sense for your sister, let me know. The setup and configuration are on me. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/beer.gif)

That Gallery system looks really good... Something like that is just what a photographer needs.

It seems to work just like Coppermine, just different look and features. All you need is a server/Web site that allows PHP and MySQL and you would be all set...

I just downloaded and installed GALLERY on one of my servers. It was a super easy process. All you need is a few priveledges on the server and Bammo, all set. It tells you exactly what it wants as you go along.

Cool!

notepad ...

actually, i use UltraEdit, which is kind of like notepad on steroids, has a few "neat" features, like syntax highlighting ...

seriously, *NO* toolkit will ever produce "professional" results unless the operator is a professional.

in which case he/she will *not* use any of the toolkits ...

PS: it's like asking for a brand of welder to buy that will result in professional grade welds if operated by someone who has never welded before.
it won't happen ...

Gallery is easy to use but it is not easily configurable nor does it produce truly professional looking results.

It is good for dumping 100 photos you just took online, however. I like it for that purpose.

After playing with Gallery for a bit. I agree its nice and quick, but I really like the confiurability and professional look of Coppermine. But I have been using that for a while and passing judgement too fast is not always best.

I actually use VI to edit my pages... Using Andy's "Wet Blanket" analogy... It's like using a Gas Welding torch to add Flairs to a 914. not the best but it can get the job done if you know what you're doing.
