On the webshots site I put a few updated pics including the fabrication for the front grill shroud into the radiator, rewired front trunk, plus the WRX Intercooler remount and turbo remount goodies from renegade. Should have the chassis stiffening done this weekend, then it's control arms/rear wheels back on and start mounting the engine.

I like how you got the upgraded axles, although my thought was that if you are not running a heavily modified transmission, you will be changing your weak link from your CV joints to your transmission. I stayed with the stock CV's just for that reason. I would much rather replace a CV than replace the $2500 tranny. Yes, my trans is modified with the quaiff LSD, billet Intermediate plate and gearing more suitable a V8 conversion. Just prefer not to do it again. Just my opinion though, keep the updates coming, it's looking good so far.

You did a nice job on your interior. I like the plain, no carpet look.

BTW your wedding looked simply lovely too! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/poke.gif)

Seriously, the car looks pretty gnarly.

Lookin great Ed! Nice pics too! If I had your skills I wouldn't be having Renegade do it for me! If you have not seen them, some pics of the work Renegade is doing for me at: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?show...c=47460&hl=suby What plans do you have for the car suspension/braking wise? What HP are you shooting for? I went with the stock tranny on mine since Renegade said it could handle up to 300HP and I have no current intention of going over 260. Mine should be done (hopefully) in time for WCC06. I intend to run mine in the occasional autoox and at the Thunderhill track event in October - should be fun!

Hey gang,

More new pics on http://community.webshots.com/user/fat73 of the conversion. I figure we're about a month away from being on the road.

Took the plunge and upgraded to Zimmerman Cad Plated Cross Drilled Rotors. Just finished "rewiring" the guages which were restored by North Hollywood Speedometer adding an oil guage, temp guage, boost guage, recalibrated tach for the WRX, and recalibrated speedo for my tire size and kicked it up a notch to 180. Blue leds.

Decided after talking with Mike at Renegade to completely eliminate all of the individual wires going to the gauges and spent about 16 hours wiring plugs onto the gauges and putting plugs on the wires in the dash. Takes alot of patience and a good wiring diagram. Now to remove the gauges all you do is unplug and go. Nothing to remember, nothing to label. Also took the opportunity to cleanup alot of the wiring. Refaced the dash black using laminate from Home Depot. Bought a busted 8x4 sheet for $20. Takes a while to do but it, looks alot better than the fabric.

Going to put the Rennshift shifter in tomorrow and finish off the interior. Gotta have the rollbar customized so I can use the great seats I bought off this site (Well at least the passenger seat has to go way too forward with the roll bar from autocar installed). Next is beginning the install of stuff in the engine bay, H valve for heat, 928 Fuel pump (already installed stainless steel fuel lines bypassing the originals in the tunnel), marrying the harness from smallcar with the harness from Renegade. Both of those harnesses together cost $1000 but with them it's pretty much plug and play, just mating up Renegades harness with the SmallCar harness, and then plugging the Renegade harness into the stock 15 pin connector, and the smallcar harness onto the engine. There are about 4 extra wires to run to the front for the new gauges, but we had already run 8 into the existing wiring harness through the firewall just in case. Every wire on the car has been inspected and replaced if necessary.

At this point the car is mechanically new except for the 2003 30k mile engine, transmisison, rack and pinion, tie rod ends, brake master cylinder and calipers. Everything else, every bushing, bearing, shocks, springs, Ferodo brakes, Zimmerman rotors, etc is new. Also put in a new ignition switch, fuse block (upgrade) and upgraded to the 924 Electric windshield washer. New carpet, all new cables, new Weltmeister sway bars on front... Fuel tank has been treated with POR15 tank reseal kit. That took about a day and a half to complete. Suspension and brakes are complete short of some torqueing that I still have to do, and bleed the brakes. Installed an adjustable brake proportioning valve, and SS brake lines.

I used some stuff called BQuiet to do the sound deadening in the floor boards and on the interior firewall. It's a foam pad with a rubber mat on top. It's about 1/2 inch thick, easy to manipulate and you don't have to glue it in the floor boards unless you want to. I bought two sheets which was way more than enough to do the interior and it was about $120. Everything else I looked at would have been twice that much.

Gotta have sleep...Ed (IMG:style_emoticons/default/yellowsleep[1].gif)

Sounds like a very complete job!!! I figure I'm about a month or two away form having mine on the road as well. Seems like a lot of Subaru conversions are being finished this year.

Ed,

Hasn't your white car been around the area for years and years? Has it always been yours?

Nice work, you'll have to bring it to one of our breakfasts once we get back to doing them.

Yep...That car has been around Tampa since at least 1980. Larry Clark owned it before me and spent a ton of money on the body conversion and all kinds of stuff ($28k documented) he had Dave Whites do. Unfortunately, someone, can't say if it was Dave Whites or not, did some really good camo work on the rust areas I discovered during this process and have subsequently fixed. Can you say tin+sheet metal screws+bondo+spatter paint? I also inherited all of the problems you get from not driving a car regularly, since when I bought it 5 years ago, the car only had 1350 miles put on it since an engine swap in 1988, and it had never been driven in the rain. First week I had it we took a road trip to my hometown in Tennessee in the freezing rain/snow. Garage queen no more. If you can't drive 'em they ain't worth having. It may look the same on the outside(which I'm considering changing, but inside she's now a very different beast.

I was at the breakfast back in December at the Cracker Barrell, but didn't have my car? My wife, Shirley was with me. Please keep me posted on the breakfasts. I don't think I've had any notifications, or is there somewhere I can find out about them?

We have been trying to come up with a way to keep everyone informed on a National level with upcomgin events. Havent quite figured out how that is going to work unless we have regional "admins".

You project looks cool.

Lookin' great Ed! Blue LEDs too! I can see Renegades subtle touch! I love that triple guage too (although it does look a little familiar)! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
Should have mine soon; can't wait to pick it up!

Later,

Added a few more pics from this weekend's work. Now have the dash complete completed except for the heater hoses which I just have to connect to the AC/heater unit. Installed the speedo cable and odomoter/trip cable. Connected the heater "H" valve using the original heat control lever, with some mods to the cable, and with part of an old honda cable. Ordered some of the upgraded speaker boxes/speakers. sat the seats in there to see how they'll fit. Next is 928 fuel pump and connecting all the fuel dots from the tank back. About to start putting the harness in the engine bay, yeehaw! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/piratenanner.gif)

Have officially named the car W9R1, which will be on the plate and the custom mats I just ordered from Pelican. Getting very close to spending some time in the engine bay. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I remeber seeing that car over the years. Always thought it was a sheep in wolf's cloths. Big wide body car and a 4 banger trying to roll those tires. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/screwy.gif)

Good luck with it and I'll keep you in mind when we do another b-fast.

That's a good way of putting it! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) However, I think that issue is about to be solved... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) The first thing I noticed about this car was how much different it ran because of the effect those large tires 275/50/16 on the rear had on the gearing. 1st gear was much more useful. I have reduced the height of the rears about an inch going down to a 255/50/16. The car had about an inch of shims that I'm trying to eliminate. Hope that did it.

New pics of trunk mounted ECU/Cover and Amp, plus underneath floorpans showing plumbing and fuel lines and power, and the custom footrest mounted subwoofer.

Finishing up the wiring this week. Starting cleanup of the engine. Hope to have the engine/tranny ready to put together by end of this week. Getting close.
