At the last AX I went to I noticed the gas pedal was starting to move from side to side
in a strange unusual manner....still works fine but not confidence inspriring. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) Took a look at the base where it mounts to the floor... Right side of mounting rubber seems to be pulling away from mounting screw.... Rubber is probably getting old...needs to be repaired or replaced. So has anyone done any repairs to this area before....and if so what did you do and what did you use to perform the repair. If not what are some good sources for a replacement.....or are they even available any more? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) Thanks |

The hinge in the rubber is FUBARed. These things are hard to get but you can still getem on Ebay. All they are is a hinge with one end longer than the other and covered in rubber.
(IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer.gif) Got my new one for 35$ on Ebay, Gluck! |

Yeah - got a new one for $75 from HPH. Mine would go 45 deg either way, and sometimes just bend to the side instead of going down (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)
There is a metal hinge completely hidden in the rubber that rusts away or breaks...yours is just starting to fail. I've read here that some people take the Home Depot approach and attach a standardish hinge to the back with screws, but who knows how long this lasts and if you want to trust it when it really matters (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) |

yepp, the metal hinge inside looks strikingly similar to what you'd see down at the home depot ....

Direct replacement, with a genuine Porsche part is perfect...plus no more metal parts to rust... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Thanks to the rest of you for your responses aswell.... Glad I asked the question before I shelled out $70+ for an original... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/clap56.gif) |

I liked the tec tip for wheel mounting pilot too....nice find WildBill (IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) Way to go WildBill! Good reference. Since I don't own a late model Porsche, I was surprised to see that some models still use wheel bolts instead of wheel studs. I always assumed this was a feature intended by Porsche to continually remind 914-4 owners that they owned a VW! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) |

QUOTE mid 80's 911(?) pedal works, they are like 20 bucks or so from Pelican, there was some talk about them here a month or so ago, you might find the thread for more info... This was suggested on a thread I started a while back when my pedal hinge started to go. I bought the 25$ model from pelican (all plastic, not too impressive) 911 pedal, which worked. BUT a word of warning: the metal rod/plunger part that connects to the back of the pedal connects higher on the 911 pedal then the 914 pedal. At least that's my guess. I can't tell for sure because I threw out the 914 pedal before I could compare. The reason I think this is the case is because the position of the metal rod on the pedal caused my cable to hang slack and scrape against the clutch cable. Also it was harder to push the gas pedal down then before. Eventually I modified things so that it would connect lower on the pedal. Luckily the back of the 911 pedal has a 'honeycombish' design where the ball at the end of the plunger can go into. You just have to devise something to make sure it doesn't slip out. But when you move the plunger lower on the pedal, the cable 'slackens' correctly, and it's much easier to depress the pedal. Just my 2 cents. |

I did have to adjust the rod length some to get it how I wanted it but I did not have any other issues on mine. I noticed the hinge point was really stiff so I flexed it back and fourth some before I installed it. Seems to work fine, I like the no rust part. I do have carbs and was installing a new crossbar linkage setup at the same time so I would not have noticed any cable length changes.
When I get home I will take a picture of them side by side to show the ball socket height difference, I have it out again because am cleaning up the floorboards. |

I just had the same thing happen to me. Rubber at the base was breaking starting at one side. Lasted about a couple of months until it got to the point that I was spending a tremendous amount of time figiting with the pedal, while driving, trying to move it back to center that I felt it was dangerous. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) Plus it killed my ability to accelerate properly.
Replace it with a new pedal ASAP. |
