I just bought Cpt Tripps retored '73 2L. Flew out to Cleveland and drove it home to NJ last week. Carbureted engine running a bit rough. Does anyone know a good Porsche mechanic in NJ, preferable near Manasquan. In my younger days, out in Huntedon Co., I used Fred Apgar (Apcar) on my '63 356B. Is he still alive and in business?

Oh well.
As for Porsche Techs, the only one I knew of was Grant Miller in Flemington. If you get in a bind, I have a friend there still that's got some connections and can likely find you a wrench. |

I had a summer share in Manasquan a couple years ago. Great town! Anyway, I had a guy in Brick do a little tune up work on my 914 that summer. The name of the shop is something like The Beetle Shop or Bug Shop. Ask around for VW Beetle mechanics in/around Brick - you'll find the guy - he's been there for years. You are better finding a VW mechanic than a Porsche mechanic. One of my best friends lives on Long Ave - pretty good surfing @ the inlet! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png) -pt |
Small world. My first house was on North Main St in High Bridge, NJ. Later in the woods, near Ken Lockwood Gorge. I know there are a bunch of Apgars in that area. Fred Apgar was special. Had a bonafide Porsche repair shop about 7 miles north of Clinton/High Bridge on Rt 513 in the little village of Califon. |

Thanks, Pete. I'll follow your lead to Brick. Glad you enjoyed the Inlet at Squan. Wonderful spot.

Like I said, if you get stumped, I can call a friend of mine in Flemington who will know where to go (at least in Hunterdon Cty). When did you live in High Bridge? IIRC there was a Porsche guy up past Vorhees High School. It's been years, but I think I can still picture all the cars out front. |

Check out NNJR PCA's website. http://www.nnjr-pca.com/site/modules.php?o...wlink&cid=1
They have bunch of places listed in Jersey that could probably help. Also, I think you're not too far from the city so you may want to look at Metro NY's website (www.metronypca.org). The other regions that may be near you are Schatenbaum and Jersey Shore. I'm not up to date on my Jersey geography.... This is also were PCA membership comes in really handy. If you're a member, give the tech chair or someone in the region a call and I'm sure they can suggest good shops in your area. |

I lived in NJ for many years near the Jersey shore. I second the motion about PCA membership. I am a member of the Northern NJ region of PCA, and have been for years. There a several shops that come to mind. There is one called Bodymotion in Ocean (I think). They are reputable and have been around for a long time. As for 914 specialists, I can recommend Europerf (affiliated with Stable Energies, www.stableenergies.com), located in Passaic. There is also Powertech (www.pwr-tech.com), located in Rockaway, NJ. Both have tons of 914 experience for street and race.
As for Fred Apgar, he was the mechanic for my parents for many years. He was in Califon, then moved to PA near Easton. He was good, but I think he is retired now. Good luck! |

DeMann in Nyack is good although his focus is racing but if you have the time he is reputable.
http://demanmotorsport.com/demanmotorsport/ Also, I forget the name of the guy but there's a 914 guy up in Tuxedo Park (near Woodbury Commons) that is also reputable. -pt |

I remember Freddy Apgar as well. Last I heard (about 3 years ago) he was running his shop somewhere on Rt 611 between Easton and New Hope PA. At that same time, i recall him selling a 914 racecar and mentioning in the ad he was "moving". Not sure if he did ever move or sell the car or his shop. While it would be a bit of a haul, Keith Peare of PowerTech in Rockaway, NJ is a 914 fanatic/supporter/racer. Bob Kakasik (sp) of Europerf was another avid 914 guy. I'm not sure how his "shop" is doing compared to the sucess of the "stable-energies" showroom/equipment supply business. He's in Garfield NJ. |

So I'm new to 914s, to 914 World, and the whole forum deal. Just wanted to thank everyone who provided tips on 914 support in NJ. I will for sure follow up. Only remaining interest is to track down that Fred Apgar guy. He was unique.
