I am thinking again about a v-8 conversion. I was trying to think of ways to minimize the cutting of the tub for the radiator install...I'm not too keen on chopping on the inner fenderwells (for escape air). I have seen guys vent the radiator through the top of the hood, but rarely does it look sanitary. I found this pic. The guy is venting his oil cooler, but would a series of (maybe larger) NACA ducts do the trick for the radiator?...obviously more surface area on the radiator...let me know what you think.

Anyone have input?

i think it looks purposeful and mean (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif) . Not that my tub is pristine, but I don't want to cut anymore than I have to......if I decide to go the V8 route.

I like it. It reminds me of what use to be done to the Panteras to help with cooling.

Bravo, Hello,I have been considering a V8 change also. I have a 3.2 911 motor complete, but I still need everything else to get it into the car.
Dollar wise I would be ahead with the V8. I have been cruzing over on the Chev-Porsche site to get any ideas,
I have also considered buying a 914 that is completed.(V8 already installed and sorted}
Still on the fence, and not really leaning one way or the othr right now.
What are your thoughts and why?

Check this out for some larger ducts.

http://corsacorvair.tripod.com/V8%20Vair1.htm

Okay, so its not a 914, but it will give an idea of some radiator ducting...

I don't know if I would put these on my car (I don't really like them), but I do think they look better the the little black ones shown above...

By the way, I sometimes lurk here because this is what I plan on building, using a Porshce transaxle with the V8...

I've seen a few cars that have the hot air venting out the floor of the trunk. They also build a box around the radiator and fans so that you can still put something in the trunk. Like a spare...

Phil Haun's car is like this.

you can do the same and have it vent out the top. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

I'm planning on doing this on my car. I got my temp gauge working and now realize that it goes pretty high when I push the car hard. The radiator that I'm considering is the Fluidyne Pantera radiator. Its about 29" x 15". I will mount it as far forward as I can, with the top tilted towards the front. Much further forward than the Renegade setup ( http://www.renegadehybrids.com/pictures/?d...ad+top+view.JPG ). Then I can vent it out the hood like a GT40 but probably with a single, full radiator width slot.

I have driven a converted car with the vents in the hood. With the top off, where does the hot air go? Some goes in the cockpit. Maybe that can be good in northern states, but here in Texas, it is hot enough in the drivers seat. Cut the inner wheelwells and get on down the road. There is also something to be said for stealth. I like car that appears stock apart from an extra tailpipe. DLee

He nailed it. Everyone "talks" about how they like the look... ever notice that you dont see any street cars done this way (914's) ?? All the cars that came stock this way have solid tops that dont come off (and the heat still comes in the windows)

Jridder,

That Pantera radiator is good for one car (the Pantera). We beat the piss out of a V8 914 at Thunderhill last year (open track day) and only the oil temps climbed past unsafe (Renegade radiator properly installed) 3 drivers.

Exit the floor or the side wheel wells.

The tops dont come off the racing version (and I would assume they figured out aero dynamically how to stop this from happening) They didnt start with a 30 year old design.. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

I think I'm with you though Brad. Mine's going to the floor.

I take it you haven't noticed any adverse effects from this air going under the car on setups youve had experience/exposure to??

Some say it can raise the car (lift).. but I doubt it. Every Corvette and Z28 out there exit the air underneath the car.

The other method is out the inner fenderwells. I dont really like this.. but I feel it is the cleanest setup and has proven itself as a solution for 30+ years on all the V8 conversion cars...it does however compromise the factory "crush" zone they built into the inner fenders.

That's what I keep coming back to - every single front engined car out there sends it under the car (except for some of the very new Rally cars like the focus) - so it can't be all that bad.

I think there is more overall downforce created than cannot be overcome by any small amount of air getting out from under the car.

Think: Nascar racers all exit the hot air undere the car at 190mph for 5 hours.
