I was just thinking about the direction Porsche is taking with their cars in recent years. I know they have to make a profit to keep independent, but I think they have lost sight of who they are, and they are trying to compete with Mercedes and BMW with luxury sports cars and SUV's, which are really just overpriced status symbols. I think pure sports cars are what Porsche does best, and one should stick to what one does best. I know Porsche is making the Carerra GT, but, really... $440000? I think that if VW bought Porsche, Porsche would be able to make the cars they make best again, without worrying about staying afloat. Even though the whine-and-cheese crowd will raise hell, I think it would be cool to see VW and Porsche working together again, kind of like 2 long-lost brothers. What do you think? Although even VW probably doesnt have the kind of money to buy a supermarque like Porsche...

I dont think it would be bad if they did buy porsche but I dont think things would change all that much. I'm not exactly happy with the new VW. I think they have lost site of what they do best as well. I'm also an old VW fanatic so....

Great idea! If VW bought Porsche then my 914 would finally have the respect it deserves....

In the future, VW may be in danger of being bought out itself.

"The EU has been working on a takeover law for 14 years. A previous proposal by Brussels was rejected by the European Parliament in 2001 under pressure from EU heavyweight Germany.

German members of the parliament had been instrumental in the rejection of the vote, saying the proposal would make car giant Volkswagen vulnerable to a hostile takeover. "

I agree.

If I had to choose a company then, yes, VW would be it. Only makes sense (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Why should Porsche be owned by VW. I think the are better as an independent company rather the boutique line of some huge corporation.

And Porsche makes plenty of great sports cars. How about the GT3, GT2, and Boxster S. You know the 914 was not an inexpensive car at the time.

Porsche's aren't overpriced status symbols? People need 350 hp?

And no company can afford to have a division losing money. Even if VW bought Porsche, the Porsche division would still have to make money. If they're not, it's called dead weight.

It would be nice to let Porsche just make neat-o cars that we could all afford, but it's not very realistic. VW is the people's car, Porsche ois the rich people's car. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Maybe I need a history lesson. I have always been under the assumtion that Karmen was the mother company of VW, Porsche and Audi and that they were all related in some way. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)
I've been led to believe this through the co-operations in production of the 914 with VW and the 924 with Audi.
Some one on this site must know. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

Porsche should always make all possible attempts to remain as an independent. The reason why the cars Porsche makes are special are because in comparison to the big car makers, Porsche can remain as a small focused operation. Yes, like most of us diehards, I cringe at the Cayenne but, it's a hell of alot better than having the next 911 or boxter based on a golf platform (Audi TT)

It would take a few pages to even summarize Porsche's history, but it has always been independent starting as a design company in the '30's. They've done projects for VW and many other car companies through out the world and some on the list would surprise you (including Harley-Davidson). The Porsche and Piech families (a story in it's own) were also intertwined with VW... get the new 3 volume set of Porsche, Excellence was Expected- you'll learn everything you ever wanted to know about your favourite little German sports car company

What's wrong with the Cayenne? It's the best in class sporty SUV. It makes perfect sense for Porsche to make an SUV.

I think its not so much the SUV itself, which is actually quite remarkable, as the people who buy it. The Cayenne defines the term "Yuppiemobile".
