I also put the front up as well. Don't want a bunch of old oil to stay in the sump due to tilt.

Another tip, remove the oil filter first, then drain sump. The oil pick up tube and pump will retain a bit of the old oil. If you drain sump and put drain plug back in before busting the filter off, you don't "get it all".

Critical point!!!!

Look closely at jack stand contact point, make sure it will hold the car without failure.
Regarding 914s RUST is the enemy.

On something I'm nervous about I'll place jack stands, lower jack, verify solid and then pump jack back up till it touches. Placing loose wheels under car is a really good idea too.

A final tip, If I'm not utilizing the jack as back up I will completely lower jack and lock it back into lift. (make it READY for lifting). This could save you when your wife is the one who gets to raise the car off of you. You will be screaming at this point and making the jack "ready to go" reduces steps for a novice.

Is using the engine with a protective soft piece of wood or hearty rubber pad between the floor jack and the engine case at the drain point not acceptable. Always thought it a little risky but the only way I've found to get a six high enough to be able to pull the engine out from under the car.

This is going to cause some flak.
I put the floor jack under the rear of the transmission avoiding the speedo cable and
the gearshift linkage by using a 6" 2x4 against the trans.
I then support the car with jack stands
I've done this on 4 and 6 cyl cars for years and it never caused any damage.
Never lift a car with jack further forward under the engine.

This method also raises both sides at once for better jackstand placement.

RaceRamps makes very nice wheel cribs. I use two pairs (i.e., 4 individual cribs) instead of jackstands for everything under the car for which I can leave the wheels on.

Here's a link to an example: https://www.raceramps.com/cribs/multi-purpo...10-wheel-cribs/ They have heights from 8" to 14". If you shop around, you can find them at decent prices, and RaceRamps runs sales several times a year.

Exactly what I did. Gets the car up just high enough for me to get my fat head underneath along with the the oil catch container.

I jack up on the passenger side and use a stand under the trailing arm pivot. I use a low profile oil tray. It goes under, I loosen the drain plug, oil screen and oil filter, unscrew the plug, screen and filter and remove. Then I lower the car back down and let it drain. Hour later I come back, jack the car back up, wipe its chin and put the new stuff on. Check to make sure everything is tight and lower the car. Oil in and done.
