My car has an after-market, non-period radio (a AM/FM Sherwood with tape player) and I want to replace it with a radio correct for the period. According to the B. Haywood authenticity book, if factory installed this would mean a Blaupunkt and it would be the "Emden" or "Braunschweig" models.

Anyone have any idea where one coud locate such radios? I've been dong eBay searches for a while but nothing pops up.

Alternatively, what other dealer-installed radios were common in '76 or is this too hard to nail down because of the number of possibilities?

The factory did NOT ship 914s WITH radios. There were all dealer installed.

So....any 70s radio/cassette combo would be correct.

Tom,
Although some 914's did come with factory installed radios, most were dealer installed. I orderd a 914 new in 1973 and the salesman showed me a display that had all the radios the dealership installed and sold with the car. Although the radio I chose was on the bill of sale, it was not on the window sticker. Many 914 did have Blaupunkt radios, many came with the same radios that were in VW's at that time. My Sahara Beige 914 has a dealer installed "Automatic Radio" brand stereo radio. It is on my bill of sale but is not on the window sticker.

Shouldn't that be 8 track?

A dealer installed Craig FM 8-track would be correct.

My junker came with the Porsche burgandy vinyl folder in the glovebox and it had the Craig manual in there.

Ah, go suck and egg..... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/bootyshake.gif)

Anybody remember those godawful 8trac to cassette conversion things? You stuck a casette into an 8trac to play on an 8trac player......

Yeesch.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

True story.....in the mid 70s when I was in High School.....I used to cut school and go to the local ski area that my Dad had some interest in.....I was able to hit the slopes in time for about 3 hours of afternoon sliding w/o having to cut any classes.....

Well anyways, we used to use old crappy mono audio cassette players and splice in a set of stereo ear phones to listen to Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull while bombing the slopes.....

Should have patented the idea....goddamned Sony Walkman came out and made a killing..... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/finger.gif)
