seemingly endless issues with my 914

Before I tore out my old leaky vacuum pump system, I had little check valves below each washer nozzle. What are these things supposed to do?

They keep the fluid from draining back in to the tank. That way the washers worked as soon as you used them.

Check valve allows fluid flow only in one direction.
