Jim
Audi owner in Sacramento

Jim, Are you on Audizine?

Since I don't know what "Audizine" is I have to say No (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

I am just a long time Audi Fan and Owner.
I have owned 10 Audi's, 4 of which were quattros.

Jim

Audizine.. either anti-depressant or boner pills ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lol-2.gif)

In that case it is a definite NO.
I don't need either of those medications.

Jim

Even if you are skilled at driving in the snow there are 25 other yahoo's up there that believe because they have a 4wd SUV they can go anywhere at any speed.

I watched one flip his SUV two years ago on my way up to Tahoe. I grew up driving in the snow so i had no trouble navigating the Jeep without chains.
I was driving at a nice pace and the guy gets on my bumper, then fly's by me as soon as the road is clear (two lane).
About 500 yards later, he's sliding into the ditch and flips over twice.

Ya can't fix stupid ...

Coming from a fellow Audi owner, I'll tell you what we all say to these threads.

Buy snow tires.

Since you have some time, check craigslist, there are lots of Audi drivers that ditch their snow wheels/tire sets, See if you can pick up a set.

I went up to the snow in all seasons that were 10 years old and had 1/2 the tread left. I did just fine. However I did drive very carefully and tested my traction abilities often (hit the brakes till the abs kicked in).

Pick up a set of snow tires, drive carefully and know your limits. A Quattro Audi with snow tires is one of if not the best vehicles for the snow.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info.. Yes my Nokian SW are snow tires too.

I know reading the actual law is no fun but here it is for Oregon.

http://www.tripcheck.com/Pages/RCMap.asp?m...icNav=ChainLaws

And Jan through April get very dicey on those passes. I drive them with some regularity. I cancel or delay trips when big storms are passing through those Southern Oregon passes.
..Thanks for the tripcheck web page. I have no problem canceling a day - if storm comes.

Call this number before you go
You can also call 1-800.427.7623 for current highway conditions
Another great tip!..thanks

And yes the CHP does know that an Audi quattro is AWD. I don't go up into the snow too often but when I do I take my A6 or S4. What model Audi are you driving?...good to know about CHP and YES - S/4 Avant is my ride... thank you too...

No really, thanks to all of your input... LAST thing.. if the close /. require chains and it dropping snow by the foot...I would simply find me a little motel anyway.

Thanks all.

Here`s my Dads story .....Him and Uncle Bob went to get the new Z-06(Bobs Car) in Bowling green Kentucky ,they didnt want to drive over the Rockies cause of snow so the went south down into texas and then west to catch I-5 ....hit grants pass in Oregon and it was snow`n like a mofo ..semi truck jack knife in front of them so of course they had to stop ,it blocked the whole freeway ..and started snow`n even harder for about 3 hours tell the truck was cleared ,almost 10 inches in that time ,and there they sat ..lol traction control didnt help just keep slipping from wheel to wheel so they turned it off did a little digg`n and with the help of OSP got the car going again just as the plow/sander went buy and had to follow it all the way down the pass, needless to say the finder flares were all chipped up when they got home ,and its still that way to this day ,,,it was a 2008 Z-06 brand freak`n new from the factory ,,I was sick! they just laughed it off ,,those two have been around the world together and just chalked it up to another awesome trip........

Just go prepaired for anything and you will be fine ..If you dont have it you cant use it! and if you dont use it great
Small shovel and sand bags ..good luck have a safe trip ..And pleas let me know when you get to Tacoma WA ..If its not snowing i will take you out in the Six and if it is we will take the Z-06 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lol-2.gif)

You can only run "snow tires" in CA in the mountains, and only certain months. You would get a ticket on the low lands for sure if they were studded. I do the trip to Nevada over 50/or 80 a lot. M&S tires, Full Time 4WD jeep, never had a single problem, unless you go at 1 AM, then black ice. That will wake you up!

Thanks.. I plan on making the trip over the Syskius ( hope I spelled it correctly ) in the DAY TIME (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) SO TO JUST avoid this black ice / to see where the heck I going- especially if it was snowing a little bit.

ps This tread has provided me more advice than when I had questions on my car - thanks (IMG:style_emoticons/default/piratenanner.gif)
