going to get rid of the headlight but need to leave the outer covers in place.

If I remove the motor, linkage, lamp, etc, any easy way to hold in place the outer door?

yes.

you can remove the lamp itself and the motor.
leave the "linkage" with the top attached. use the threaded stop to keep the cover down instead of restricting the up position.

or, you can fab your own frame for the top.

Dave,
I ran my car with the covers on but the lights removed for quite a while. You can fab some little brackets out of sheet metal. You'll be able to use the existing holes in the cover to attach to. And like Andy said, you can still use one of the linkage parts even after you take everything off.

Leave the pivots in place and fab. a bracket that replaces the bar from the popup motor to the headlight.
This is something I did years ago but I forget the exact details. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)
