If it's too old - & our 914's are too old for them - then you cannot get a CarFax cuz they'll only work on the newer longer VINs. Also CarFax is wrong too often.

We ran one on my brother-in-law's Honda which we knew had been totaled & re-titled as salvaged after repair, but CarFax said not - clean & regular title! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

IMHO - don't waste your money with CarFax/etc. spend it on a good mechanic & body shop both to thoroughly check it over thoroughly - if beyond your skills!

I've encountered errors as well. But I still think it's a good idea to get a report, so you don't run into any surprises down the road should/when you decide to sell. Pre-purchase inspection by competent mechanic and body shop, definitely - that's $ well spent!

Thanks guys, looking at picking up a diesel VW Jetta or Golf. Just figured I'd run a carfax or an autocheck on it before actually buying it.
