I have been working my tail off and saving money to build my 2litre motor this summer, so far i have saved $2500, If should have another $1500 in a month or so. However, I have been seeing 2.7-6 and 2.4-6 on ebay, the recycler and other places from $850.00 - $4000.

My question is - is it worth upgrading to a 2 litre from my 1.7, when a couple of thousand dollars more, i could get a six? And what is involved (price wise) to convert it from a 4 to a six.

Give me some feedback -

Craig

You will be able to build a good 2.0 4 cylinder for $2000-$3000.

If you go to a 6 and have to do any rebuilding $3000 will not even begin to cover it.

Engine gasket set for a 4 $40.00, for a 6 $400. New Ps & Cs for a 4 $400, for a 6 $2000-3000.

Also with the 4 you can do a lot of thework your self.

Here is what I send people:

Prices subject to change... Oh.. and I dont use Vellios tanks (only factory) unless the customer brings me a Vellios (at which point I try and convince them to use factory.

Or you can be patient and just buy stuff when you find great deals.
I bought an original 914-6 engine sheetmetal set in good shape for $50. I got a 914-6 flywheel in great shape for $60.

I just keep pickin up parts here and there and sooner or later I'll have everything checked off the list.

Brad what happened to that 2.0 six conversion you did for like $500? Tell the story man. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Are those cool Canadians (Sabin, Marc-Andre, Michel Richard) on this board? Those guys rock. Sabin made his own steel GT flares, and I think it was Michel who made his own bulkhead -6 engine mount for like $30. He also made a 914-6 oil tank using 911 oil tank parts (but then didn't use it instead opting to use a real 914-6 tank).

It wasnt quite that cheap. I bought a already running converted car from the old classifieds and yanked the engine/trans out and sold the roller. Bought a real tank and lines... installed the RJ mount and made it run (barely)

The new owner is on here. His name is Tim. He got what I felt was fair deal for a super clean chassis/decent paint. He ended up rebuilding the engine (its on his avatar) I wish he had more time for the BBS. I know he has engineering skills that could help us out on some new parts.

Yep. Saw the car just over a week ago at the GGR Autocross at Candlestick. It was Tim's first autocross, and I was his instructor. Nice guy. He rebuilt the motor himself to a 2.2 (not sure what specs). Had good power. I wish my chassis was as clean as his. He had a good time. He'll be back for more.... My approach is simmilar, but without the $2,000 2.0 rebuild. I'm slowly gathering six parts as I find them, and in the mean time I'm flogging the old 1.7 till it croaks. If I kill it before the six is ready I'll drop in another old $200 1.7 and flog it too. Any serious money goes toward the six.

So - if i could find a good six for 1000.00, and the conversion kit is going to cost me 2-3k i have a sixer for less than $5000!

Doesnt it seem more logical to spend the extra 1500 on a six than spending 2500 on a 2litre 4?

Or am i missing something? Help me out Brad, bring me back to reality someone - I dont want to start something I am going to regret. I have the money to start the 2litre 4 project, but if all i have to do is wait another 2-3 months to get the other 2Ktodo a 6, ill wait.

I would wait. I "assembled" the last 6 for around 5K The early engine are cheap to come by. Nobody wants them. I would save even more and hold out for a 3.0.. or buy this engine and use the Webers off of it later for a 3.0.

First things first: Is the chassis any good ? I dont convert shit cars.

I have a few /6 conversion question.

1) Is it a clean install-any cutting of engine bay/ rear trunk bulkhead?
2) Is it possible to use a sideshifter trans?
3) How does it attach to the body? (obviously not the same engine hanger bar!)
4) Where do you mount the dry sump (oil tank)?
5) what is the best six to put in there? (2.0, 2.2, 2.4 w/ mfi, 2.7 CIS, etc)
6) What Will fit back there?
7) What about "hand throttle"?

any pics of installs or components would be appreciated. Also, what would total cost be to do just a full engine conversion? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

You can do a /4 for a lot less than a /6.

The /6 is cooler of course, but if you have to rebuild a 2.0-2.4 /6 you may as well have bought a good 3.0-3.2 to start with.

Once you have a /6 done you will want to upgrade to 5 bolt fuch's and brakes etc. so you might want to add those prices in.

Then you will want flares thus a new paint job as well.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif) the ching, ching, starts to add up!

Whoa.. Luckily.. I like you acox...LOL

1. NO cutting (unless you want to run stock CIS on a 2.7/3.0 engine)
2.Use either trans (side shifter or tailshifter)
3. see pic below (my close friend Rich Johnson makes it)
4. Oil tank mounts in the factory location in the fenderwell behind the driver. Look for the "bumps" on the inside firewall near your relay board. Those are the factory "bumps" that we cut for the factory 6 tank (that you can still buy new)
5. Best 6 (best one you can afford) If I had my way.. I wouldnt do any conversions unless the owner had a 3.0 or 3.2.
6. Everything up to a 3.2 bolts right in with factory 914/6 parts. The 3.6 requires tons more work.
7. Hand throttle is no problem.. but not needed for any of the injected engine.

F..k the hand throttle

I have a warm 3.2 in my 914.
It has a re geared side shifter tranny

Mine has a NOS 914-6 oil tank

If you get your webers and your ignition dialed in, it starts and runs first try (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer.gif)

Hey! People are talking about me!

Normally I'm just overwhelmed by the number of posts. I pick and choose what to read... this thread made the cut (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

As for this thread on converting to the 6, it was surely easier and cheaper to buy something that was already converted, but needed mechanical work. And rebuilding the 6 wasn't that big a deal. Yes more expensive than a 4, no doubt, but I did everything except the head rebuilding in my own garage. Granted, my garage is a bit better equiped than some. I've spent less then 4 grand total on an engine rebuild and lots of enhancements/upgrades. That doesn't count my recent spending spree.

Brad, I do have a fair number of little "clean up" and "replace" work i'm doing on the 914. I've got some interior customizations that are coming up, simple stuff. The shifter thing is on my plate. Other stuff like better fuel lines and such was really about finding good parts (summit racing helped me out).

HEY! I'm finally accepted!!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) jk

thanks for the info and answers, where does tha engine mount pic hookup to the car, it doesnt look all that wide. The reason i ask abou the trans, is because i heard of a conversion car that the linkage hit the headers/HE's and wouldnt shift into all gears (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) .

What differs a /4 car from a /6 car - other than drivetrain and suspension
1) hand throttle
2) no door beams in doors
3) something on one trailing arm? (read that from an earlier thread...fill me in)
4) fixed pass. seat. and non retractable seatbelts
5) different ignition/wiperswitch/ turnsignal
what else.....?
