I just looked up the list prices on that clutch. List. $273. Few shops get list, but that's OK. Figure a simple clutch replacement takes an experienced VW tech an hour, maybe 2 is the going rate. Add maybe a half hour to do the seals, and maybe some labor for the flywheel resurface, but they often don't need that. You're gone for $600. Might be a little more in the Bay Area. They saw your friend coming ...............

Edit: Places like Midas are known for this kind of thing, and they're the kind of place the CA attorney General goes after. Therre are few, if any, Goodyear, Penneys, and Firestone auto centers left in this state, and there need to be fewer Midas, Meineke, and Pep Boys stores ..........................

You might consider letting the forum members here know what shop this is, so others can avoid his price gouging practices ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sheeplove.gif)

I've been watching this thread, and I have to agree about the price being too high, for what it's worth and my lack of solid mechanic experience.

I mean, the guy writing up the estimate didn't even spell Porsche right!

Check it out..he spelled it porche. The generic hand written bill bothers me too, as most notable shops will have their logo or at least name printed on the receipts.

It just seems sketchy...but hopefully you can get some recovery from it.
Good luck!

I had an experience once with Midas to replace the muffler in my 79 Camaro. Guy walked around the car on the lift, writing on his little clipboard.

Came back to me and besides the muffler, told me my car was riding low and that it needed new shock absorbers. Car riding low because of the shocks??? Sure dickwad, just put the muffler on.

Man, i'm feeling a bit sick to my stomach (IMG:style_emoticons/default/barf.gif) . Bottom line is that I screwed up - should of demanded estimate and at the very least questioned the invoice before I paid it. I don't feel comfortable going back now to argue a price reduction but I do intend to convey the overwelming feedback that I received here. Maybe pointless but depending on how he responds will certainly determine any future relationship. Thank you all for the feedback and recommendations.

On another note, i did remove the muffler to replace the gaskets in an effort to rid the popping on decel. Won't re-install until tomorrow because I decided to clean up muffler apply a coat of heat resist paint. Out of curiosity I started the car with just header/exchanger to see if popping still existing - it did. Does this mean my leak is before the muffler gasket or is this typical without muffler installed (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) . BTW - there was clear evidence that the exhaust was escaping at least at one of the the muffler gaskets as you could see black residue on the bottom outside edge of the gasket (no seal). I'll try to load pic of this tomorrow.

Thanks again all. Bill

Hold on...don't
beat yourself up to much. If your car runs good, it ain't to bad for Maryland Porsche rip off repair professionals. If your car still runs like shit, I would take it back. Popping could be from lean burn.

BTW...Ive been nailed worse.

As others have said, chalk it up to experience. When I firstr bought my car I took it in to have the fuel pressure checked because I wanted to be certain my fuel pump was going out before replacing it myself. The shop said they would just check the pressure and do nothing else as I had instructed. I got a call 4 hours later saying they had replaced the pump and 'checked some other things out'. They charged me $700 for doing nothing but replacing the pump. Although I know I had just been (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sheeplove.gif) I decided it wasn't worth the fight to try and get my $ back after realizing that the shop wasn't going to play nice.

Since then I have done all of the repairs myself or with the help of another local 914er.

What is the name of the business?
The address listed on the PDF (5360 Enterprise Street, Eldersburg MD) lists out as MD Performance Coating and another coating business, but not a auto shop that has a name that looks anything like whats on your bill.

Please let us know what company it is that did the work. There are quite a few of us around here, and the bad shops need to be avoided. Please don't hold back the name of a shop that has screwed you over.

you got screwed over of course , I thinks it's the mythical

" PORSCHE "

name sake , no matter what the parts and labor , shops can go w/ the old'

everything porsche wise parts are scarce so that drive's up makebelive price .

and everthing porsche labor is a bitch , so they can drive the price up as much as they can dishonestly keep a straight face w/ you .

BUT

my shop is great an local , the guys an old sandrail guy , who's up to his ears in the right parts . Has a in house machine shop . / mech. + try to find people like this .

He refuse's to work on anything 6 related . by the by

had a spare emerengcy brake set up , just laying around waiting for me . (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif)

and for all the stuff you had done he might have only charged you about 1500$
also the guys great w/ brake's .

It cost me 5 bills . to freshen up a teener i bought .

plugs , wires , filters , oil change ,

new e-brake , new hood latch , boot relase for motor . new horn setup

got everything working right . freshened up

BUT BUT BUUT (IMG:style_emoticons/default/av-943.gif)

It is true that know body knows what's up w/ the car and you never know what will need to be fixed . So i sympothise w/ the mech . there because it's a reality

I bought a 5k car and when my mech. put it on the lift and started to check it out .

IT could have broke into 2 pieces down the middle and been a pile of scrap .

So you have to prepare your self for the worst .

luckily it's supposed to be a pretty solid car as far as rust is conserned

just my experience's (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/type.gif)

and ___________________________

since you have carb's , is this a good buy for a 1.7 and how is the freeway cruising w/ weber's , i've heard there louder (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sawzall-smiley.gif)

Seems a bit odd...
