Ok, I am considering chucking the old 009 dizzy. My 2056 is running dual 40's,. 494 cam, stock heads. The Mallory looks to have a fairly good rep, allthough I hear Jake is not recomending it these dayss. I see a few other choices out there for aftermarket, does anyone have any experience with these:

1) Pertronix Flame-Thrower Performance Distributor (looks like an 009)

2) Pertronix Flame-Thrower Billet Distributor
http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=1477

3) Magnaspark II™ Distributors
http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=432

4) SVDA

Shameless bump here. Great drive up on the twisty roads this weekend, but feel like I am lacking low end grunt. Will a new distrib make a big dif? Running an 009 with pertronix now.

I bought an old Mallory dual point and a Pertronix II conversion kit. I also bought a Mallory spring kit and installed the gray springs. It made a huge difference in the way the car idles and eliminated the nagging off idle bog that I couldnt get rid of. I had a 050 with a pertonix kit in it and it sucked. It runs like a completely different car with the Mallory distibutor in it. If you run the Pertronix II you can also run a lower impedence coil that produces a hotter spark at an idle.

My $.02
I used a SVDA type with my 69 912. It was from a car called the Puma.

The advantage was an advance curve not as limited as the 009 due to the fact it used both a vacuum and centrifugal advance. I found that with an 009 I could never get top end power when setting to the recommended advance setting, but I could never get any low end grunt when optimizing the timing advance at 3,200 rpm and above.

The SVDA type from the PUMA engine, which BTW was basically a type 1 style motor with big bore kit bumping it to 1749cc.

Yes I know that a 912/356 motor is different than a type 1 and a type IV is different than both, but I had a similar experience and found that to be the solution.

Thats the same problem I had with then 050. If you set it up at 3200 rpm the off idle advance is wrong and it bogs. The Mallory has adjustable stops that make the amount of total advance completely adjustable. You could probably achieve the same thing if you had someone that new what they were doing adjust a 050 or 009 on a distributor machine. The Mallory makes adjustments easy. The Mallory has a better bearings and a bigger cap that make for a more stable spark and timing.

I am crrently running 12 dgrees of advance at idle. With the 050 I had to run 7 or 8 degrees of advance at idle.

Where did you plumb in your vacuum advance? I have ports below the carbs on the manifolds to easily do this, but hear you want to pull vacuum BEFORE the butterflies in the carbs. Drilling my carbs for this sounds a bit scary.
