I bought a type 4 engine with the serial number EA043106. Can anyone tell me what size this motor is?

Actually, it's difficult to tell from the engine code. We know it STARTED life as a '72/'73 1.7. Until it's torn down, there's no way to be sure what it is.

oh krusty one... excuse my ignorance here, but how do the numbers read? is there a system to them or is it just a rough idea related to lower numbers and up through the years?

"EA" code engines- 1972-73- 1.7L (non Calif)
"EB" code engines-1973 1.7L Calif

my mind is drawing a blank on the 1.8L codes

I've got a number / letters thats not on the list or maybe I have the wrong code. Read it off a tag that was rivited to the case by the oil cooler inlet I think. .....5573 AP 442063

That's a rebuilder's ID stamp. Original IDs are stamped into the case.
