I also got an engine stand/yoke in and popped the engine onto it so I could begin tearing it down. got the sheet metal, FI off and then the valve train, heads, cylinders.
The heads look better than I thought they would... no big visible cracking around the spark plug, and it looks like all the seats are in decent shape for 40 years old.. the exhaust studs are pulled on one of the heads and were tack welded to the heat exchangers which was fun convincing them to let go, but it doesn't look like significant damage. What I was most surprised with was the condition of the lifters.. A couple of them had a very slight dish in the centre that you could only really see if you tilted it away from the light and got a shadow on it, but most of them looked absolutely spotless. I was expecting to see some FOD damage or scratches or heavier wear or SOMETHING.. I also popped off the oil pump to have a look since theres been a few threads lately about failing oil pumps... Mine looks like its in good shape.. I'll be replacing it anyways, but its nice to know it wasn't about to go boom. Now I just have to find myself a proper pair of snap-ring pliers and I'll get the pistons off and work on splitting the case. We are working lots of overtime right now at work so I should hopefully be able to save up money to get engine parts and heads rebuilt while I get working on more welding.. While I save up some more $$ for engine parts I have gone back to welding the floor in.. I've finished welding the underside 3 sides to the floor pan and have now started on the top side.. I have the tunnel welded to the floor pan and the whole square where the drivers seat mounts, and most of the drivers side seam from old to new pan.. My welding is getting better ( I think ).. I keep checking with a hammer/screwdriver to break the welds and they're strong.. This is the first time I've welded since a couple days in high school so its a big learning curve. Its coming along nicely I think...

Keep up the good work. I feel your pain dealing with the rust. Did this with my Beetle in Montreal 25 years ago.
BTW, nice wheels... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) ![]() |

Well.. Its been a little bit but I've gotten some more work done.. cleaned off the undercoating from the front floor pan and found some more perforation. Not too bad so I just bent up a couple patches and welded them in. Ground down the welds a bit. Not all the way but at least enough so that they aren't too big. I'm still new at welding and I have to perfect my skills so I don't have to grind so much down after ...
I'm on holidays this week and have been told that I can spend the whole week working on the car, as long as I get my eldest daughter off to the school bus stop in the morning... My 8 month pregnant wife is amazingly supportive of me restoring my 914 ( I'm contractually obligated to state this (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) ) I painted the underside the floor with some epoxy primer today. Got the garage/barn up to temp, turned the kerosene heaters off and sprayed. Waited a bit until the paint flashed off and opened the bay door a bit , turned on the fan to blast the fumes out. Closed it back up and turned on the heaters back to temp. I don't have the room for a rotisserie so I'm now painting on my back. Its easier than drilling out spot welds and welding in floor pans on my back, thats for sure. I couldn't get far enough away as I'd like so I have a few drips but I'm not too concerned since its just getting undercoating once its ready. Attached thumbnail(s) ![]() |

Forgot to take pictures of the patches and fixes in the back firewall but I got the rest of the grinding and cleanup done and shot some primer.
