I started building my replica center console today. Took about an hour to get this part done. Actually wasn't hard at all. Next step is the other side. Then things get hard.

This will be a subwoofer box. I have an Eclipse 8" sub on the way. Once I'm done I might have to do it over if the box volume is too small.

I used to use a calculation for volume back in 1987 or so... I'm sure there has to be something you can use to figure this out BEFORE you move forward.

I could find out the desired volume ahead of time. And then I could figure out exactly what the volume of the box will be with all of the various sides and the cantilever for the accelerator pedal. And then if it's too small I could figure out how to make it bigger and start the calculations all over. Whew!

Or I could just build it and see if it's right. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) I'm sure I could pawn off a good center console speaker box to somebody.

There's a time for calculations and there's a time for try and fly.

Mark, If the box ends up being slightly smaller than the specs call for, I wouldn't worry. In my truck I have a 10" in a box I built that is .12 cu ft smaller than the minimum specs of the sub and still sounds great, only lost a little low end but the bass I do have is tight! Still gets pretty low for a 10". Even the guys at the stereo shop were surprised.

I'd be more worried about the depth. Subs now-a-days have a really deep mounting depth. Leave at least a 1/2" gap between the magnet and box wall.

Yeah, I'm a little worried about the depth as well. I'll have the sub in hand next week so that will solve that problem. By my rough estimations my box will be a little over 600 cu. in. which is pretty damn small. Might be as high as 800 cu. in. if I'm lucky, depending on how far off my calculations are. I expect that it'll work well enough for my needs, regardless.

Kicker makes an 8 that only needs .83 qf! Thats what I used!

Just looked at the specs for the Eclipse 8" sub and it wants 0.3 cu. ft. which is 518.4 cu. in. So I should be just fine. I'm stoked! Very nice! Just need to make sure the depth is workable.

the rule of thumb i use, is that you have a 10% you can add or remove from the manufacturer claim. sometimies you can have more. making the box bigger give more low end, and making it bigger more high end and response(punch)

good luck with that one. are you finishing it with factory look vinyl or carpet??

100% factory look. I'll have a very good upholstery shop do the vinyl work. Don't know which one yet, but I'll be paying bank to make it look 100% original.

I mounted the Delphi XM antenna to the 914 yesterday. Placed it on the dash and ran the wire along the windsheild. Since the dash is metal under the vinyl, the magnetic antenna stays put. Works pretty well there too after my quick test. I'll be removing the old non-original radio and mounting the Delphi to a blank plate covered in basketweave. Mounting a small amp inder the dask to power the kick panel speakers. Since the Delphi doesn't have a volume control, I bought a small pre-amp with a volume control to control amp output.

At least now I know this sub is going to be perfect for my enclosure. I'm excited. Now I just have to find another one like it. I get a refund, but they don't have a replacement so I have to find another seller. The morons shipped the sub in the factory packaging without anything addition to protect it. Or course it had to take a huge hit to damage like it did, so really everyone is out to get me. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)
