I'm wondering what the benefit is one over the other?
Stock = lighter, less weight to change direction? Chromoly = stronger, "zero" lash? Steel = strongest, heavy? "Zero" lash? I ask because I have my first air-cooled motor with steel push rods and so far, liking them. They are quiet compared to the stock units that need the larger lash setting. Is it just they take more energy to push around than stock push rods? Inquiring minds want to know. http://www.dansperformanceparts.com/buggy/...%20pushrods.htm Does this mean both steel and chromoly are "zero" lash? I know it's been talked about before in non-push rod specific threads, kinda wanted to get one good thread that laid it all out. Thanks for any input. -Dan |

stock - cheap, limited use. Good only for stock applications.
Chromo - Expensive. Zero lash. Cut to fit. Probably not worth it for stock applications. Zach |

Cr-Mo is stronger and lighter than domestic steel PR's
Stay away from the EMPI junk. Manton are the best, Bugpack 2nd choice. Slightly more noise than stock at zero lash, a lot more if you set it to .006 Zach is right, stock you can stick with stock. |

my take on it... probably wrong (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)
aluminum: stock to slight performance, no serious valve springs or lift con: limited perf. steel: stock heavy springs, con: heavy chromoly: cool factor (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) , light but strong, con: expensive note: i'm not sure if it's the swivel feet, chromoly or both reducing the engine noise, but the VW "thrasher" engine sounds are greatly reduced from stock i think like most of us gear heads here, i really enjoyed setting up the valve train geometry too. Thanks for the info. I should find out what my T3 is running. It's a 2275 with a pretty good cam. The sad part is when I put my stock 2.0 914 idle next to the T3 2.3 at idle, the 914 is making a heck of a racket compared to the T3. My 914 is stock, so probably not worth it. Just want it to shut up. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) |
