I know this car was talked about before but I have a question. In the June issue of excellence there is a story on a slightly modified 75 914. One of the things done was to remove the backpad and just use black carpet behind the seats. From the magazine photo I can't really tell if I like it or not. Has anyone here done this? Got pics?

I pulled mine out several years ago and replaced it with a adhesive insulation material with Al foil shelding. It has adhered well. I can't say how much it decreased heat transfer or reduced noise. It is covered up well by the upholstery. I am trying to work out an agreement with a manufacture of a aersol/liquid insulating product to evaluate for use as a firewall insulating. It is still in the initial stage, but if you would be interested as being another test car, let me know. My agreement with the company is that they supply the material free and assist with evaluation.

I used DynaMat Extreme on both sides of my firewall. Much better, and keeps it a little cooler as well. I was a little concerned about the weight, but the whole box only wieghed 20 pounds, and I used about half. Little pricey, but worth it.

The back pad weighs 10 lbs or less, but the rubber mat comes in at around 25. Weight removal was my priority, but the inner wall was too ugly to be left uncovered & too much of a PITA to strip to bare metal/paint.

That is what I thought. In the magazine photo it looked nice but they didn't say anything on how loud it was.

Eh? ...what'd you say? ...speak up...can't hear you...the engine's too loud! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

I can't understand why there's a radio in the thing...I can't hear it except at stoplights. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)

It's not quite as loud with the top off. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

I would leave it in a street car. Lose it on a dedicated track/ax car.

Garold -

I've been considering doing the same thing to the 914-6 in my garage (with the fixed passenger seat like yours). The car isn't so nice that the loss of a backpad will effect the value. By the way - I have pics of your car in my driveway from back when Adam still owned it. I'll see if I can dig them up and post them for you. Nice car - and a ton of fun to drive with the European pistons. Glad to see it ended up with someone who can appreciate it!

Matt

That would be great. The only thing I have done to it is put Fuchs on it. It is a great car! Needs a little body work & Paint but very very solid!

I like the carpet look, but my car is loud enough for me the way it is. Maybe in a few years after I get enough seat time I can build(or buy) nice track car then it won't matter.

If you see Adam tell him (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wavey.gif) and that the "Go Kart" is doing great.

I made my own carpet set including covering the firewall. I also stripped out all of the soundproofing. I like the sounds personally, but I wouldn't waste my time installing a radio. I'll try to post some pics tonight.

Do you have any pics of the install? I'm thinking of putting some on the engine compartment side to replace the rubber mat, but I can't tell if it'll look ok or not just visualizing it.

i really dig the clean interior look of losing the back pad. i am thinking of gutting my car of the back pad, console and anything else to achieve that look. i am the only one who rides in the thing so i don't care about the noise......

that is until i get that v8 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/MDB2.gif)

i've seen to many 914 rust out at the bottom of the fire wall, from the engine side because of water and leaves trapped between the exterior pad and the metal. Never saw this rust on the early cars without the exterior pad.

The interior pad will absorb some sound, and it looks nice (my opinion). The pad behind the interior pad (glued to inside of fire wall) does dampen sound, and I frankly would leave it in a street car,

I did have a car that i pulled the floor pads out of, down tot he painted metal, but htats because the car leaked in the rain, and I wanted the floor to dry out between storms, made the car a little noiseier, but probably not as much noiseier than if i removed the fire wall inner pad.

Other wise it is personnel preference., but on all the newer cars i have had, I removed the exterior pad on the fire wall because of my rust concerens (and every one had the rust starting out!)

I'd like to see pics of any car with the backpad removed (and you alternate solution for covering the bulkhead) with the rest of the interior installed. Anybody have some?
