QUOTE(jkeyzer @ May 4 2004, 09:39 AM) So who painted it? Looks nice! McMark's friend Brandon painted it for me. I'm really happy with the way it turned out as well. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif) As for the wheels, I'm keeping those (steel) for now. I think they actually look pretty good with the silver paint. Is there a way to polish those with a compound, or are those un-polishable? I'll have to wait until I pay the orange car's loan off (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) Jen |

This was the original Barbie car, (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) my car before paint. This pic does not show it, but that is magenta/purple/pink on the side... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

oooohhhhhh Jen, that looks *good*. Great color choice (Real porsches are silver after all (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)), and the work looks great. It'll be good to see it as a running car! (the withdrawl is almost over! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) )

Jenny, those rims of yours are painted steel...about the only thing to do would be to paint them again. Some Volvo rims* have a nice bright silver that would look nice on those. It's different enough from the car color so that it would stand out.
*most all the new rims are silver, but the silver I am thinking of looks almost like a matte chrome finish (powdercoat more than likely, but it might be something they could spray on) |

If you are going to do something with the wheels, I would paint the centers a darker color, (metalic grey, satin black) and finish the deep rims in close to car color. I think it would dress them up nicely...
My 2 cents (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

Can I rattle can them myself, or is that a big no-no? I really don't want to go thru the trouble of taking them to a tire shop, then taking the rims to be painted, and then back to a tire shop to have them remounted.

QUOTE Can I rattle can them myself, or is that a big no-no? feel free, no harm can be done (I'd either remove the wheels from the car or at least mask the lug nuts a little, also, becareful with the overspray, wouldn't want that new paint job getting messed up) |

Yeah, I'd take the wheel off and mask the tire. Can I paint the bolts as well, so they match? I'll see if Brandon has any leftover paint I can have a shop put in a spray bottle for me.

Hey Jenny,
Are those the wheels you got from Ed Carlson? If so, can I have dibs on 'em when you go to replace them in the future? Or was that Mueller that bought Ed's wheels? I can't remember. And I agree, you can rattlecan those wheels. Eastwood sells a nice wheel wilver. Wurth might have a noce silver wheel paint as well. I think they look cool with no trim rings BTW. Just paint 'em and pop on some black plastic caps. |

I just ordered some eastwood rattle paint. In charcoal and silver. Any experience painting those rims? What prep work is needed, if any? And if I wanted to paint the spokes 1 color and the rest of the rims another, how do I go about masking it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

for the paint, also get some clearcoat. once the rattle can paint is dry, put a acrylic clear coat over it. it'll look nice & shiny and last much longer ...
as for the masking, get cheap-o masking tape, tape around the rim first (or center, for the spokes) than take newspaper and tape the edges onto the first layer of tape. that way, you get a nice, clean edge ... easy as pie (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Andy |

On masking the tires, using a length of flexible cardboard or stiff paper to make a tube that's the exact diameter of the outside of the rim, then just standing that on the tire, is the easiest way. Work "inside" the tube with the tire is "outside" the tube.
Simple masking tape and patience can be used to get a contrasting color. I'd paint the whole wheel in the lighter color first, let that dry, then cover everything you don't want to be dark with tape and newspaper. Clean the wheel very thoroughly first. You'll probably want to scuff up the paint with something like a ScotchBrite pad before painting. |

I would blast the wheels first if possible, give you a nice clean finish for the new paint to adhere to.
