The idea of my dizzy being 180 degrees out seemed like a very likely one to me, put after messing with it last night, I don't think thats the problem. The dizzy will only go in one way. Not matter how much I jiggled it or wiggled it, there was no way I could get the rotor in 180 off. So, I'm quite sure that the dizzy orientation isn't the problem. I also took one of my spare MPS's and tried to lean out the mixture by tightening the small inside adjuster screw and the car ran worse and worse till it finally stalled out.
I'm thinking that the problem has something to do with the ignition system. But I'm stumped as to what I should look at next. Ideas? |

Tried two different coils, no change. Different plug wires, cap and rotor, no change. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) Could fouled plugs cause this big of a problem? One of the only things left that I can think of.

fouled plugs can do all sorts of crap, and runing über-rich for a while will certainly foul your plugs. change 'em, it's cheap.

If I remember right (I havent worked on the teener in over two years) the dizzy can be built 180 off. If so, it'll index properly, but the top and bottom shafts will be 180 off causeing the rotor to be the same.
Just throwing ideas out.... --Alex |

I had thought that as well. I have another post which asks which way it goes in relation to the rotor. Does anyone know?
Thanks |

The only way to move the distributor 180 degrees is to remove the distr. drive shaft below first.
I don't think that's your problem. Did you set the timing with the distr. vac. lines removed and plugged? I have worked on engines where the retard line was disconnected and plugged, and when I reconnected it the timing got all screwed up and the engine wouldn't run right anymore. Must be due to a vac. leak or something. A vacuum leak will cause the MPS to send the wrong signal to the ECU. I agree that checking the CHT sensor (and in-line resistor if you have one) is a good idea too. |

When setting the timing should the vac lines or ports be plugged? I thought the just had to be off and left open.

I believe that the vac lines should be plugged. It's probably not a big deal either way, but it will be a small vaccuum leak. The ports on the dizzy canister should be left open. Do you have both vaccum advance and retard, or just the retard port?

I have both because I opened the advance port on the TB. Is it possible I have not enough back Px due to a crappy old muffler? I have a bursch on the way. Is it possible that there is too much retard. It really wants to die when it is hooked up. Everything else on the fi checks out. I have the exact same symptoms as mike - the backfiring. I am completely open to ideas and opinions(related;)
