Two words:
Air Chisel. Takes 10 seconds to pop out the bearings or the hubs. I use a blunt bit so as not to damage the hub itself. Show us with some pics. B |

Drill some holes in a piece of plate so you can attach it to your hub with the lug bolts. A triangle-shaped piece with three holes for three lug-bolts should do. Drill a hole in the center of the plate so you can attach your slide-hammer. A few whacks with the slide hammer and the hub should pull out.

I tried all sunday to get my hubs out for a 5 lug conversion, but I really busted up my finger and almost took out my fender too (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smash.gif) ...
Im going to give it another shot on saturday though. Any suggestions? I was thinking of using heat, but it seems like if I used heat on the hub, it would expand into the bearing and have the adverse affect. I tried a piece of bar stock from the back side hammer it out with. My engine is out so i have more access then normal. Would a piece of barstock turned down in the center to fit inside the hub and with an OD of the hub (smaller then the bearing ID) work with enough force? |

Haven't tried the airchisel option, but a big hammer works. You need 5 or more lbs hammer. Tried 3 lbs deadblow first but that's too wimpy. Use a correct size socket and extension as recommended in the Pelican article.
On one side, the outside inner race of the bearing still came out with the hub . Guess it was locked/rusted to the hub. Gonne be fun getting that off. To get everything back together, the method in the Pelican article works like a charm (threaded bar + 2 bolts/washers + 2 sockets). |

QUOTE was thinking of using heat, but it seems like if I used heat on the hub, it would expand into the bearing and have the adverse affect. If you heat something with a round hole in it, the hole gets bigger, not smaller. It doesn't "expand into" the hole. The best way to visualize this is imagining the item as beads on a string. Arrange the string into a circle. If you heat it, the bits of string between the beads get longer, so the beads move away from each other, and the hole in the center gets larger. |

Oh, you're right. I'll try heat again. I remember something about thermal expansion, but I forgot which way it went. My physics book says "imagine the hole were filled with the material."
Oh well, it looks like Im going to have to scrounge up a piece of metal to drill out and use. Good tip! |

I've been telling people for 4 years that this is the way to get those hubs out without beating up yourself and the hub. I think you're the first person who listened! Thanks! -Ben M. |

Went through the same thing when I did my 5 lug conversion. Ben gave me the same advice. Works like a charm. Carlos |
