is that a trick question?

cause i already said it's NOT part of the engine!
so, NO it's not mandatory for the car to run.

but it IS crucial for keeping your 914 on the road!

We took every nut, bolt & screw off the 72 before it broke in 1/2 and I don't remember seeing that part. Either it fell off before we got the car or had rusted away.

Or it's a galvanic anoide (to stop the car from rusting) and was never put on in the first place. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif)

A dust cap/plug for the suspension....

The key phrase is "on the road". Tells me it's either an alignment piece (literally on the road without drifting off) or safety related item (Germans are nuts about safety).

My gut instinct tells me it's one of those rubber pieces that holds the headlight assemblies in place. Or... maybe the elusive German flux capacitor.

That is the factory "Rust Stopper Plug". I read about it in Pano years ago. When it falls out, rust starts.

...never have seen one in place before. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/w00t.gif)

To review, it keeps the 914 on the road, it is on the body, the picture is the visible portion of the object, Jenny does not need it anymore and it is just smaller than a quater. Is that correct?
I have gone through 3 beers crawling arround my 914 looking for it, soooo, I loose even if I get the correct answer. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)

#1. The rubber plug that holds the trim piece on the headlight assembly. Believe it is referred to as an "eyebrow". 3 per side.

or

An alien part left over from "Superbeetles" as they were assembled in the same factory and the assembler had gone to lunch and had a few to may biers and got confused (IMG:style_emoticons/default/drunk.gif)

or

Something you dug out of your tool box that you can't identify (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)
