I was considering this 914 that I can get for a song. I know it needs a new pass floor, rotors, injectors and possibly calipers. The CO (Current owner) has never even driven it. It was his plan to restore, but his wife is making him get rid of it. I think it might be too much to tackle. Am I making the right choice?

I also owned a very rusty mid-west car. After deliberation I found a very clean running car for a lot less than the restoration. Unless you are into the challange of rasing the dead and getting another 914 back on the road. I recommend my path. I love the new car and am already driving, my other one would have taken a good year to make road worthy.

WOW! a rust free east coast 914! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

seriously, that would be alot of work. many would consider it a parts car even on the east coast. what engine?

only worth it to you if you do ALL the work and get the car for, like, $0

where in VA? i need another car......

It's a 1.7. I like a challenge, but this might be a bit much. I don't mind learning to weld, but I think I'd be an expert by the time I was done. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blowtorch.gif)

Yes, very close to $0 is the only reason I'm considering but all the other issues scare me.

I guarrantee there is WAY more rust than you know about.. there always is. If you can see that much, it's about to fold. Take off the targa top, open the doors, stand on the passeneger side door sill and jump... then run (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

why would anyone even think about getting a 914-4 like this? you'll dump 100's of hours of labor and $10k+ into a car that'll be a pieced together former ruster worth a few thousand $. buy a solid complete car that needs TLC for $2500 if you want to do work.

Now be nice. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

The price was attractive. When I talked to the guy it became less so. I finally received the photos tonight which confirmed my gut instinct.

Well I see A lot of good parts, If you have a place to keep it, and its "almost free" it will make a good parts car that you can sell or trade parts off of.
I'm a believer that if you own a 914 you need a parts car, of course not everyone has a 2000sq ft shop and 10 acres to store one.. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Some people enjoy the restoration process, and lots of people throw 5 figure sums of money at their hobby (whatever that might be) they'll never get back. Restoration is not about economics, except for a select few that restore nearly priceless cars.

If you're in any doubt, don't buy the car. A full restoration is a big deal, requiring months or even years of effort, so it requires a high degree of commitment. It can be a wonderful, fun process, but you have to want to essentially take on a second full time job to get it done in a reasonable amount of time. I know a number of people who've taken a car in a similar condition, put the effort into it, enjoyed it tremendously, and sold the car for 10% of what they sunk into it. Then did it again with another car.

This is one of those things that can't really be explained to anyone. Either you get it, or you don't.

yup. buy it. some nice interior pieces in there, maybe.

as for restoring it, i'd keep looking. you'll have enough on your plate with a car in twice the condition.

I try to have a parts car around at all times...tried not having one but that didn't work out so well....and it could be a very valuable training aid. I learned allot from taking stuff apart on my parts cars first, so I didn't tear up my good car.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) I have 3 parts cars (actually, what's left of them) being inherently frugal.

The A/C center console is worth some money and more if the A/C system is still in place.

One requirement is to park it on the front lawn so that the neighbors can admire it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

And hey, it still holds up whatever is leaning on the front bumper - it can't be all that bad (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

I like a challenge ...

I wouldn't, not even if it were the LAST Yellow 1.7L 914, with absolutely NO factory or dealer options WHATSOEVER (i.e. Bargain Basement), as this example seems to be.

Buy it only if you want a 2200 lbs. door stop.

From the looks of things that car is done. If you can get it for a couple $100 and have room to take it apart. You can use the good parts on a better body and start there. And sell the remainders to finance the better body/car.

The pic of the rockers (or what's left of them) dosen't show how bad it's underneath. But you can tell the body is sagging already from that photo.

Can it be fixed? Yes, for about $10,000 in parts and materials/time. Lets face it some cars aren't worth saving.

Take that money, fly somewhere and buy a nice one, then drive it home. Much more nicer way to spend some cash.
