I just picked up a 74 914 with 2.0 engine. The engine was previously installed by the "the wagon shop" in Bellevue WA. I don't have the recipts, but it is a 2.0 engine with the original 1.8 FI. It also has hydraulic lifters (no valve adjusting). My first question is, are hydraulic lifters good or bad? Also, could it be possible they installed a VW Bus motor in the car instead of a genuine 914 motor? How would I tell the difference?

Hyd. lifters=some people swear by them, others swear at them, personally, I think it would be great not to have to adjust the valves all the time.
i believe the dipstick location is a giveaway if it's a bus motor, as well as the engine id numbers. if it runs, I'd leave it alone until you need to or really want to drop the motor and split the case. |

Not really…you just have to put a 914/411 breather/filler on and a block off plate.
Even the dipstick is not too hard to do on an assembled engine. Serial numbers, block off plates for the filler and fuel pump are the real signs of a bus engine. |

Worst thing that can be done to these engines! The best "Upgrade" to destroy everything from performance to longevity! |

Jake,
Would you mind elaborating on the downside of hydraulic lifters? I am looking at a car now that the owner has done a great job with. Nice resto. and he swapped the original 1.8 for a 2.0 with the stock F.I. The only modification to the engine is hydraulic lifters. Should I look at this as a bad thing? Price reduction? Ben |

I have thousands of times. all it does is start arguments with engineers, or guys that have built one or two engines..
Its not worth it- |

I have a set of brand new hydro lifters and cam (came out of a GEX engine, ick) that have gone flat.
Very low miles, will sell cheap. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) |
