What would be the problem in using a 71 ECU on a 73 914. When comparing cable tterinals they match. Is the potential problem internal to the ECU? Ed M.

If they are both 1.7L ECU then it should work. Consult Brad Ander's site:

Pretty much like Anthony said. The '73 2.0 uses a 1.7L ECU (0 280 000 037), in combination with different injectors, MPS, and a ballast resistor in series with the head temperature sensor to accomodate the difference in displacement.
