I need to replace the main seal, thus I need to remove the fan hub. I will use the method recommended in the past to force the hub off using the three outer bolts with a plate or washers to protect the case from damage. I have read that these things can go flying when they pop, and I don't really want that or to loose the woodruff key. So my question: can I leave the center bolt in with enough clearance to allow the hub to break its connection, or is that a bad idea (risk breaking the bolt)?

I have just held a balled up rag in front of it so I can catch it. I haven't had one "fly off" though.
