The 2 plastic lines that come into the engine bay from the charcoal canister & whatever the other thing is goes to the engine shroud & air cleaner??? Is it necessary to have them connected for proper running or is this just an emissions requirement?

Enviroment thing. Be careful on this one. You can disconect them, but if not done right, you will get gas fumes in the car.

I would leave them hooked up, even on a sixer conversion I am donig now, I am making sure to hook them up.
