You have to remove it... then replace it.

Do I dare ask if you "tested" with the permatune after getting it running correctly ??

This will rehash what's been posted to Rennlist. Long story, but yes.

In short:

1. Put in Permatune - not at all driveable, but replaced many parts on the advice of PT tech support. No lightshow in the engine bay at night.
2. Put in a stock unit - drove 300 miles to Iowa.
3. While in Iowa, put in Permatune.
4. Couldn't make it two blocks.
5. Put stock unit back in, drove home.
6. Got rid of the Permatune.
7. Cleaned, adjusted, etc various parts of car.

But my car runs well now, and I'm a very happy camper.

Sorry you had a bad experience LB. Just for fun... the Permatune I used was marked bad..but I decided to test it anyway..because I didnt recall marking it bad. It worked fine. Did you tell Permatune to shove it up their ass ?

Lawrence-

Beore springing for another tach, are you sure you checked everything between the distributor and the gauge? On an original six there's at least one relay on that wonderful relay board in the engine compartment to complicate the circuit. I think its purpose is to reduce voltage going to the tach for a more accurate reading. Without this speed sensor or whatever it's called to complete the circuit, your tach won't work. If you bypass it, you may fry the tach. Or maybe not. Someone explained this to me years ago, so maybe this is inaccurate information. Somebody wish to corroborate this story or refute it?

Good morning, Mersault,

The item you're referring to is the ballast resistor on the relay board. I'm pretty sure mine is okay. A new ballast resistor is about the same price as a good used /6 tach.

I may have a line on borrowing a couple of spare parts to help troubleshoot.

Can someone tell me about PA Speedo vs. Hollywood? Any difference in quality, service, price?

Was that a repair, or did they repaint the face as well?

N Hollywood re-calibrated my tach, fixed my trip odometer, repaced all three plastic lenses with glass and then put new bezels on all for $220. Quick turnaround and they look and work great.

N Hollywood rebuilt the speedo in the blue car & it works great. The shop sends everything to them and I've yet to hear of a bad one.
