Optional Clean Heat, my attemp for gas heat Options

I live in the PNW and wanted to try a different approach.
1. clean no motor air
2. Instant with out motor running.
3. not gasoline.

Reading about auxi. heaters for years, I always wanted a Wabasto Esenbacher OR
or similar, with the no idle laws in place they became much more affordable, but run on diesel, yes they make gasoline (not what I wanted)
Price new 1100-2000

Searching around I found a propane fired unit Propex hs200, $700
more the teener price range.

I did consider the deisel wabasto ,but I dont like the smell of deisel and propane has the nasty odor for saftey.

I was still not sure how the thing would perform so I did a quicky install.

I only had to drill 2 - 1 inch holes and various screw hole , not bad.

As I said this is the quicky install for testing.............so far so good.

Current condition , and 10 minutes of running, unattended, Engine not running.

Here is the location I chose. passenger footwell. I lost about 5 inches of foot room.

Remember, temp install for testing. I have fabbed mounting brackets.

Intake and exhaust through the floor and back.

Agian at this point only 2-1 1/4 holes through the floor

The cover aluminum, As you can see thats as far as I got, I plan a vent facing back, and hose the splitting off right and left with 1 1/2 tube for defrost.

I left all wiring long , Testing Testing

That really looks like a good option for heat. Have you taken temps? Although it sure looks like it heated up well. As I get older, heat becomes more important.

OK the fuel supply, 11lb 2.5 gal propane tank $6o. ouch, good news $10.50 to fill
I am going to cut the board and just the top will protrude up still allowing some trunk space.

So far for air circulation I have capped the long heat tubes and cut off the hose flush behind the speaker grill, So the defrost air is being pulled from inside the cabin.

Works OK, but needed a better push = Fan.

So I got a couple of Carrera footwell blowers and found they fit quite well.
The hoses do not hook up well though.

I have these fabbed up and the hose will be a straight shot and tidy up the install for sure.

BTW the foot well blowers are an awesome addition = Defogged front windshielsd.
As i mentioned earlier, an 1 1/2 hose to each intake of the foot well blowers will work even better.

Have you considered using the camper sized bottles like they use for hand held torches?

Very interesting. I don't really have an application since I don't drive mine through the winter, I'm just curious about a few things.

• Do the intake and exhaust have some sort of baffle or something on the end to keep crud and critters out?
• Would it have been practical to vent to the front or side? Our cars are so low to the ground those intake/exhaust pipes seem pretty exposed.
• If that's designed to heat a Westy, I hope it has some sort of thermostatic controller. Otherwise you'll probably roast. It doesn't look like Propex makes a smaller model. I wonder if you can dial its output way down?

Skip, I really wanted to mount it in the rear trunk, but I also wanted to monitor the
thing.
And yes I already smashed one its low and daily so it goes everywhere..

It does have a thermostat and does work great , but when driving it is necessary to shut it down manually, much like reaching down and adjusting the Red knobbed heater lever.

Ya I did , But I thought the bigger was better, propex says they will run on the smaller but suggest the 2 1/2 as the best .

I went to a get together and my 914 was great=warm, The gentle roar of Heater, just sitting there. Another -6 conversion was there and he was freezing his rear off.

Project warm daily, so far so good.

WTF does that mean ? I can go out start the heater go in for 10 min come out be happy. If you dont like it fine. I doubt you drive a 914 everyday. Movin On
