My son has a 99 Impreza non turbo. The engine is getting hot. I filled the side tank and the radiator. The engine has coolant but doesn't seem to cycle anything from the side tank.

Thermostat or head gasket?

Define getting hot....
Does it heat up pretty fast and continue heating ( like in the first 10 minutes)
Does it overheat sitting in traffic? With the AC on?
Does the fan come on when you turn on the AC?

Check those before worrying about a head gasket IMO.

Thanks guys. Traded it in on a 4WD Dodge mini truck. We were open about the issue with the dealer and he took it in anyway. So the issue is resolved.
