I see some parts dealers slammed every now and again on the web but who is a good dealer to buy new parts from?
I know of at least four of these but have not dealt with any of them other than to get free cataloges from them.

There will be some major and minor purchases made in the next few months so where should I go?

Thats the big 4 of 914 parts places. AA has lots of stuff too but charges alot for shipping for some reason.

HPH is much bigger than AA parts wise.. just doesnt have a catalog or a full time shipping person.

I placed an order with Pelican today for a handfull of parts that ran $185.00. The same order at Automobile Atlanta would have been $255.00. Pelican, however does not seem to have as much stuff as AA. Pete at AA seems to be an OK guy. He is George's brother. Other than price, I'm not sure why so many people here are anti-AA. I'd really like to know myself.

AA has rubbed a lot of people wrong that happen to frequent this board.

I dont like them.. but I dont hate them. I think it is great that George has put forth as much effort for as long as he has...selling 914 parts both new and used. I didnt see anybody else stepping up to the plate for steel flares with 100k for tooling..

I ordered a part from AA a while back that was unavailable anywhere else so I had no choice. After 2 weeks I still didn't get the part so I called. The guy I originally spoke to when I placed my order seemed very knowledgeable. When I called back to see what the problem was, I spoke to a different guy. He looked up my order and there was no record of it. He told me that there's one guy that works there that sometimes doesn't write things down, and then forgets - the owner George Hussey. I asked that the part be shipped to me overnight at no charge and they did. So, they fucked up, but they made good.

You can search for 914 parts (it's kind a pain in the ass), until you learn to navigate their sight. Everything doesn't always pop up from the diagrams (for example they may show the right tail light lense, but not the left). You have to click the category heading in blue at the top to get everything to appear.

If you order enough parts, the shipping (usually around $50) is made up in the savings.

I priced out a complete weather stripping kit (we're talking leterally EVERTHING, but the bumpers. Rear targa seals, engine bay seals, inner door channel fuzzy stuff, you name it and it came to about $1000 for all original Porsche stuff. Not repros.

They have some hard-to-get stuff too.

The website is in English and they send you a confirmation in English as well. Spoke with them on the phone a few times and they were very helpful.

If you need any good used parts, Mike's 914 in Oshawa, Ontario. Mike is a good guy.

Shipping kills, as does brokerage, duties, GST, now even PST, etc. etc.

Try to make complete, big orders. Yeh, it will cost a lot in the short run, but lots of small orders cost major with all the above expenses involved. All cars over 25yrs old are called antique, so have them mark "Antique Auto Parts" on the bill, saves the import duty.

UPS sucks, they like to double dip on the shipping charges when the package crosses the border. Make sure the shipper numbers the packages (1of 5, 2of 5, etc.) or UPS will try to ding you brokerage on each ($45 each) package.

You can use the post if you not in a hurry, it's way cheaper, but always ask for full insurance. USPS has damaged one order on me before and I presently have a package that is lost in the system.

Believe it or not Mittelmotor in Germany.

Well Karl, I certainly believe it. Moreover, they are my main source of 914 parts (new, used, or hard to find). They also make an effort to correct delivery failures (in my personal experience). Delivery of parts takes considerable time, even when not overseas. Take this into account.

Other sources:
- Porsche Classic GmbH; they certainly have NOS (and new stock). The 914 parts CD they issued some years ago is very helpful to see what still is available. Some prices are horrific; over $ 2000.- for a new rear brake caliper is absurd in my opinion.
- Your local Porsche or VW agent; it's amazing what they sometimes can come up with. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) For instance, the 914 front wheel bearings are the same as those on the rear of a VW Golf. Many 914 parts are in fact Bug parts (part number starting with 311) or 411/412 parts. The above applies to Europe, don't know about the US.
- Tweeks Free catalogue. Haven't ordered from them yet.

For years it is rumoured that there still are large stocks of NOS in Germany. We'll see when that shows up. And at what price. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

I can "second" (or third) the good words about Paragon, GPR and Stoddard. They have all come thru for me consistently...the latter two for over a decade now. I have had "mixed" but overall quite positive results with Pelican as well. There are lots of other good folks on my supplier list too, but those are the ones I repeatedly look to when I need stuff.

Most of what I have been buying lately are specialty race parts vs. mainstream maintenance/resto stuff. You just can't get it all from one place, which makes the process more challenging and perhaps more "fun".
