Looks like the Fiberwerks unit is the one I am going with.
The dual electric fan cowlings will not require any machining of the block, will be actuated by a thermostat, allowing oil temps to get to 180F before turning on. The wiring/thermostat is similar to the unit I used on the rocket for the oil cooler that I robbed from a 930 Turbo. Pretty solid, I had no problems in three years of use. I will be using a 90 amp one wire GM alternator so the electrical load won't be overwhelming. Just ordered the conversion flywheel from Kennedy....decided to go that route as the 914 flywheel from Rimco cut down seemed "iffy"....200mm kevlar "mikey proof" clutch and heavy duty Sachs pressure plate. The GT flares arrived last week, the 993 wheels are getting powder coated, ordering rubber today. Anyone wanna come over and help sawzall some fender well cut outs? When was the last time anyone got the opportunity to sawzall a 356???? Z |

Little far to go but try a Bosch sabersaw with a metal cutting blade Mike. Much easier to control the cutting and very little bounce compared to a sawsall. Thinner blades too if you are going to butt weld the flares on.

I would love to see your car during the conversion process...I will be moving out there in June. Anyway, what transmission are you using in the 356. I am doing the same in my 912 with a 5-speed 901 tranny and I thought that I could use the stock type-IV flywheel with a 914 clutch and it would work fine. Do you think that I need or should consider a different flywheel?
What did you decide to do on the headers? Are you going to try to regain heat in your car at any point? -Britain |

I am going the cheap route and keeping the stock four speed. It has a 6volt housing like the early VWs and the 200mm clutch is the biggest I could fit in there.
If I blow the trans, I will uppgrade to a 915. But then I have to pull the rear torsion tube and repalce the whole rear running gear..... |

Not to mention either buying or fabricating a special input shaft like they used on the 912E.
The 915 hooked to a four-cylinder is not worth it. Go 901 if you go to the later tranny. BTW, I still think you should go the Joe Cali route on the cooling. I don't trust the FiberJet setup at all for a street car.... --DD |

Yeah.. Z,
I'm kinda surprised your going that route with the Fiberjet setup. I'm betting the decklid wont close with those. They sit up too high in the wrong spot for a 356. I'm sure they work fine in a 914 config. B |

I KNEW someone had a set laying around picking up dust....Tim Hannum is sending his used stuff.....woohoo...
Z PS...as to the decklid, it's already up on spacers for more air flow, should not be a problem. |

Z, I am interested in how this works out for you...do the fans always run a constant speed, or do they pick up speed as the temp rises? This setup saves about ( what 20lbs?) and it sure would open up the engine bay...cant wait to hear some reviews. Tony |

Hey Karl... dont "provoke" the "adults" around here.
I get complaints from harcore Christians and Baptist every time somebody posts a nudie pic of some sort. Not everybody is into the naked chicks scene. I also get slammed about people reading the board at work and people seeing the monitors.. I asked jackasses like MikeZ to start a new topic that SAYS loud and CLEAR "PORN pics" so people can pick and choose what they read instead of scrolling thru a topic they may be intrested in and getting an eyeful of tits and ass. I dont care if you post the pics.. but cut me some fucking slack and start a new thread like I asked with a topic of "PORN Pics." so everybody knows who the porn pic posters are and are not surprised like this. To me, I'd have a lot of explaining to do if my HR director came walking in the cube if pictures like that pop up. Even some of the avatars I've got to make sure are hidden while I read the posts.
I'd hate to see someone get canned from this stuff that is not labeled. |
