Drove it to an every Sat. eve. car enthusiast get-together that usually has 20 - 30 interesting cars, from oldie goldies to new exotics - kind of a smaller version of Cars & Coffee.

Only 5 Corvettes were there, only interesting one was a '61. Needless to say, the 914 didn't fit in too well. One of the Vette owners used to have one. But no one made fun of it - but a young man who was a really smart car expert who kept saying, "It's a Volkswagen!"

Would have fit in well with the group that was there 2 months ago.....

Oh well.....I love my 914.......

Stripped out all the inner windshield trim and rubber, plus the pedal box, all the front lights, and started pulling the wiring harness.

Lame I know but I took it off of jackstands and rolled it outside so I could start the floor of my shop.

Fresh air pic and a pic showing the new hip style of 165r15 fronts and 195/65r15 rears.

Not sure whether to put this here or in the new thread on jetting......

To review, my car came to me with Weber 44's that almost everyone told me were too big for my '76 2.0. But they were installed, jetted and tuned by the local Porsche dealer here and car was running perfectly with them in 2005/1,000 miles ago. Mike Tomlinson's Weber Bible says the carbs will fit and jets are within his parameters:

Mains, .135; Air, .175; E-tube, F11; Idle .50; Pump .50, 36mm venturis.

Friend in whose new barn the car was abandoned said car was running perfectly when parked - he had just ridden in it.

Engine surprised me with its power accelerating, but months of struggling and I cannot get carbs tuned to idle well. Then installed the 32mm venturis I bought over a year ago because experts here so recommended. Installed them last week, idle much improved but still not good enough.

BUT the 32's brought a huge loss in power - 50% or more my butt-dyno says. Totally unacceptable......

Finally diagnosed problem had to be vacuum leak, but where? No vacuum lines & new carb gaskets. So I checked the intake manifold bolts. EUREKA! All of them were LOOSE! Only 1,000 miles after being installed! Shame on the local Porsche dealer. Tightening them quieted noisy engine (thought it was exhaust).

Tightened them up (new gaskets soon), and just last night got the idle smooth, adjusted mixture screws, and then balanced the carbs, and great news is I got about half of the power I lost back. This little engine had acceptable power with the 36mm venturis, and I know what it can do with them. And it ran smoothly with them years ago.

So with the intake manifold on tightly now, I may put the 36mm venturis back in...

But first I'm going to try .145 and .150 main jets and see what happens......

Feedback from the Weber experts is welcomed..........

FWIW, the schnor washers used on the CVs work well for the intake stud nuts. Using cut washers requires quite a bit of torque. The added CW thickness can cause issues dependent on the intake bases.

Months ago I was having trouble with the linkage to the starter valves on my Webers, and several here suggested disconnecting them - that they were really not needed and could only cause problems if left in the on position.

I agreed and disconnected them, another reason being that my 2.0 is the best starting engine I've ever known, and is running after 1 revolution every time.

But as it's gotten colder, I've been having to pump the accelerator for a longer time before the engine warms up enough to idle on its own.

So what I did was purchase 2 cheap throttle control levers/lines for a lawn tractor for $13 each at Tractor Supply.

I mounted them in the engine bay just over and to the rear of the relay block, connecting the left one to the starter valve on the left carb, and right to the right.

Now, for a cold engine and cold day, I open the engine bay, move both levers to the rear (idle for a lawn tractor) turning ON the starter valves. Engine starts perfectly, idles at a higher RPM, and as it warms, I move the throttle levers to full open position, which turns the starter valves OFF.

It all is over in a few minutes, and with the engine bay lid open, I'll never drive off with the starter valves left on. Because the engine would be idling too fast.

For me, the perfect solution to both having the use of the starter valves (which work great) and eliminating the possible problem of leaving them on.......

Pic coming soon.....

Backwards. The schnor are thinner than cut washers. Also known as Belleville. McMaster-Carr offers them under that name. Way cheaper than buying schnor 8 at a time.

just got the '74 back from the shop. My mechanic installed the new Tangerine Racing shift linkage.
What a HUGE difference! Thanks Chris for the great product.
Also put the new 914 and 2.0 badges on the car. I'm sure those have been off for a while now.
Gonna drive it this weekend!

Several nice 914's at a local all German car show in Paradise Valley yesterday. Patrick Motorsports brought a few cars and had customers park on the grass... I took my '73 last year, but this year took the '72 targa.Attached Image Attached Image

Looks great! Match looks perfect in the picture, I am curious as to what paint brand did he use? My painter did sample 4 before getting one they actually matched the OEM Copper Metallic.
