Got a break in the rain today so, I took my 13 year old daughter and we jumped into the '74.
Drove to the gas station, filled her up and then took a drive around the valley for about a 1/2 hour.
Had a great time!

Spent most of the days tweaking the carbs, installing new plugs & wires that I had in the car in October but pulled when trying to diagnose ignition failure on 11/4.......they were not the problem and needed to go back in.......

Engine idling well, strong on WOT, but still serious flat spots on easy acceleration......

Last week Richb45 and I had a blast hitting the twisties in our 914's and comparing them.....his being totally restored, new engine, sway bars, and fresh paint - is my goal.......

Tired of staying at home so took to the backroads.

Stopped to chat with the guy who sold me the supercharged 914 (now with a Raby 2056).

Made him drive the car (he never drove it during his 3-year ownership)

Went for a one-car, one-person 90-mile drive on near empty roads in Cornwall (south west England). Possibly the last time for a few months, but what a gorgeous day for it.

Have fun everybody, stay safe and wash those hands...

Nice 1.8l Head! Interesting how the exhaust header has that extra covering on it. Mine never had those.

Well, after a long hiatus on 914 projects, I ordered 90% of the parts to backdate my 75 bumpers... Oof, that is a bill!!! I'll post as it is done. Good to be back on 914 world.

Rebuilt my door latch mechanism.

Cleaned them up with Brake Cleaner and greased them with Lithium!
Started with Brake Lube (same can color and size) and had red die all over them. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) Fortunately the Cleaner took the color off. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Put them in the door and then took them out since the locking mechanism was still binding on dirt.
Figured out how the locking works (ingenious) and then went through another cycle of cleaning and lubing.

All installed and operating like new! I also was able to 'tooth-brush' the latch handle on the door to remove years of grease in the little grooves. (sorry no picture of this)

Attached Image

I could not take it apart since it is built with rivets that are mashed and installed with tools that I cannot even imagine. So this is as good as it gets

Attached Image

Has anyone ever taken one of these completely apart? I would have loved to brush all of the individual parts and rebuild.

@ctc911ctc check out this post in Darren's epic build-off thread.
you're on the right track for sure - he uses a lot of "white spirits" for soaking parts like this - and a toothbrush. He just has more patience than the rest of us - by a long shot.

I would never take one apart but a good cleaning with dawn dish detergent and a brush should work well and then lube all moving parts. I blasted and plated the worst of mine and they came out nice.
