i just wanted to start a thread to see what you guys do day to day on your cars.

i'll start,

about a month ago, i pulled my engine and trans to put in a new clutch. had the flywheel lightened and resurfaced. but what i didnt know is that i had to shim the little ball that the clutch arm rides on, after a resurfacing. so guess what i did today?

yup, pulled the trans and put an extra washer under the ball. you have to goop up both washers to get it to seal because the threaded hole goes all the way thru to the inside of the trans. i also replaced the plastic cup that the ball rides in. the throwout bearing and its little plastic blocks were fine so i buttoned every thing back up. 5 hours total. i think this has been the cheapest repair yet on my car. $2.75 for the little plastic cup.

what did you do to your 914 today?

Drove over to California Motorsports in Lake Havasu City from Scottsdale with a couple friends to drop off the transaxle from the '73 for a refresh etc. What a shop!!! They can pretty much anything for AC'ed Porsches, and do some incredible work with billet aluminum. Can't wait to see and feel the finished project- going to get rid of god-awful Eastwood paint on the case. Don't ask what I was thinking when I did it 10 or so years ago...

Then off to Ollies, a famous machine shop just a few blocks away. One of my buddies had an engine there and we were checking it out. Also VERY impressive!!

Nice to see some younger guys keeping the faith for us "old" farts... they'll be around much longer than I will be...

Used this great knowledge of wealth on this 914 website and made my own locking nut to convert subie 5speed awd to 2wd. My friend Dennis is the best welder I know. Race shop on fourth street in Berkeley. Japoniks instructions are 96 percent spot on. Got the engine running but I bought one with a blown headgasket. Had to pull it all out and pay peter as well as Paul. LOL in the meantime I'll start working on the backing plate.Attached Image

Reorganized the shop, moving the lift. Took some pix of the '71 for Brett Johnson's upcoming book on the 914. Original seats and original carpet, never been touched in nearly 50 years. Usually have towels on the bottom part of the seats...Attached Image Attached Image

Sorry. That is not a "shop". That is a display!
Shops have jack stands and crap everywhere and tools left out from the thing that you worked on yesterday but didn't put yet away and.... wait, what? Is that just me?

Seriously, though. BEAUTIFUL set up. I'll take note and do better going forward.

Great looking clean organized shop. I just started mine up, let it run in the morning, it is off season here because of the extreme heat

For AR-14 I made up the driver side bracket for the rear wing. The brackets on both sides need finishing but for now I get to see them in place. Every time I get something done I get the inspiration to do more.

AR's build thread is in the Paddock.

Completed full Bilstein’s with CG coilovers in the rear.
What a significant difference the handling and comfort is from nearly 50 yr old shocks.

Great looking shop and cars. Lucky guy. But I'm not sure how good an idea it is to have your open top Targa under a 914. Just saying.
Enjoy your cars.
Bill.

The lifts come with trays to keep 'stuff' from the 'upper berth' dropping on to the 'lower berth'.

Only thing to do is fill up the holes now.

Went to the gas station yesterday to fill up the 6 after the Corona 914 drive... decided to calculate the gas mileage. Used 8 gal total for the whole trip. Somehow got 25.8 MPG in the 3.8 for that trip (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Then of course I had to take it for a rip through the local hills before coming home (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)

Wiring to front of car done, now to wire up the inputs in the drivers compartment (switches)

That sure looks crooked, need to fix that.

@Mueller

Very cool! Interested to hear how you like the InfinityBox. I’ve got a set here, but haven’t decided if I’m going to use it or a different PDM yet.

@jd74914

I was looking at the ECUMasters PDM before I was offered this unit at a great price. Holley has a new PDM however it is obscenely expensive.

A few weeks ago, my '73 developed a grind going into reverse and 1st gears. Got the car up on the lift and tightened the clutch cable. Problem fixed....BUT I decided I should replace the clutch cable bc it was so old. Ordered the cable from 914rubber and got it installed. Then, since I was trying to tighten up the shifting a bit, I decided to replace the engine mounts and upgrades to wevo transmission mounts. It was during that project that I figured out that the engine leak at the front of the motor was coming from the oil pump. Easy fix bc the bolts holding the pump in had backed out and were super loose. Tightened them (not too tight!) and oil leak gone. Also decided to replace the three bushings for the shift rod since the rod was removed to drop the engine support bar during the motor mount replacement. Also replaced the cover over the side shifter bc a previous owner had tore a hole in it and fixed it was a thick layer of some type of epoxy. Then, I noticed the speedo gear was leaking. Time for a new two seal version from 914rubber, and since I had been having a bouncing speedo, I ordered a new speedo cable as well. Still waiting on the cable, but everything else is done. Funny how the list of projects spirals from one minor adjustment!
